If you have a website, you know that traffic is essential, especially if you have something to sell. Not just any old traffic, though – you need targeted traffic. How is targeted traffic defined? When you receive website visitors who have a specific interest in the topic of the website, you would consider the traffic “targeted.” For example, someone who is planning to buy a wedding ring would be interested in jewelry websites.

How do I get targeted traffic? Here are some effective techniques you can use:

Forums:

Whatever your topic, there’s sure to be at least one forum about it. Subscribe to a couple of forums. Join in the discussions, answer questions, and ask pertinent questions yourself. Become known as an expert in the field. Then with each article reply you write, have a discreet link to your website in the signature file. What can be placed in your signature is often determined by the forum moderators. Do not spam the forum or you will be stopped from posting. You should be able to get a fair amount of traffic from a popular forum, and the people who click your link will already be familiar with your writing style.

Linking from and to other websites:

Look for websites which are similar to yours (but which do not compete directly). Ask the website owner for a reciprocal link. Be sure to pick link partners who match your customer profile. Try using a software program like Arelis to help you find link partners.

E-Zines:

Buy adverts in ezines that target your market. Perform a test to ensure that the return on your investment is enough to cover the cost of the adverts. You may save a considerable amount.

Newsletters:

Offer your visitors something of value, such as an eBook, in exchange for signing up for your newsletter. Write your newsletter so that it’s tightly focused on your subject. You should publish your newsletter regularly, preferably once a week.

E-Books:

Write (or have written) a free informational eBook which you can give away to your clients and others. You can place links back to your website in the eBook.

Buy Expired Domain Traffic:

This may be the most expensive in terms of money, but also the cheapest in terms of time. You will usually get a traffic boost within a month. What is it that you’re buying? You are buying traffic from a company which has invested in expired domain names.

They are domain names which are still registered on the search engines which get a certain amount of traffic. The previous domain name owners have not renewed the registration for whatever reason. The traffic from the expired domain name is redirected to your website. This is usually high quality traffic as only expired domains with relevant traffic is redirected to you. As always, you should undertake a test run to see if this traffic is suitable.

When you combine these techniques and apply them consistently over time you will find a rich source of targeted traffic coming to your website. This, combined with quality products will ensure the success of your online business.

The second and final day of the Affiliate Summit expo was slightly less busy than the first day of the event, as many participants had a very tight schedule and needed to return to their respective destinations, or perhaps, for some, just run for the hills from the enticing allure and over-the-top luxury that epitomizes Las Vegas. Although there was much affiliate marketing, networking business and deal-making taking place during the day, for AMWSO in particular, it was a pleasant opportunity to meet and greet in person a variety of colleagues, partners and potential collaboration opportunities, in a bit more relaxed atmosphere.

Some of the interesting and extremely influential people that AMWSO had the chance to meet and talk shop throughout the day included Brett Shearing, Business Development Manager for Commission Junction, who let me know that CJ is developing a Pay-Per-Call tracking technology, as well as Jennine Rexon, CEO and founder of the Rextopia network, Brendan J. Smith, CEO and founder of the Motive Interactive affiliate network, Gary Kamikawa, VP of Interactive marketing for Mpire and one of the fastest growing java-enabled ad networks Widget Bucks in addition to truly international participants such as Scott McCarthy, International Publisher Sales Manager for the largest U.K. affiliate network, TradeDoubler.

One of the most lively and spirited conferences taking place during the last day of the show was “ABW: loved or hated, but never ignored”, featuring a panel of ABW moderators including Chuck Hamrick, OPM for Affiliate Crew, Deborah Loxly, OPM for Team Loxly, Michael Coley, founder of Amazing-Bargains, Ron, OPM of 7 Days A Week marketing and of course, Haiko de Poel, Jr., Administrator and CEO of AbestWeb. The key takeaway from this conference was that AbestWeb has become over the past 6 years, a trusted third party in the affiliate marketing industry that is open and honest as well as provides an ideal platform for any affiliate, to have a fair voice to communicate their trepidations. On the horizon for Abestweb, Haiko de Poel, Jr., announced a social marketing aspect that is in development for the 42,000-plus members, which features an expanded profile and ability to add friends, create groups and other affiliate business related functionality.

4. Complete your distribution to second and third tier article directories. At this point, the value gained is less than the primary article distribution sites. The true value of these sites is the possibility of a webmaster using the content on their own site complete with author box. Again, I would modify the article once prior to distributing to all of these sites, but don’t spend a lot of time on it.

5. Update content on your site regularly. If you want to optimize the value of your content, be sure to update information regularly. This is not say that your content has to change daily, but new content should be added to position your site as a valuable source of information.

6. Offer an RSS feed. After your article has been published to your website, be sure to encourage users to access this content via an RSS feed. A feed allows users to get access to your content through a feeder or back link to your site. As a result, they are less likely to copy and post your content. Rather, they can provide an excerpt and link to the original content that is present on your website.

As always, you want to be cognizant of what Google is doing and how they are viewing content. To avoid being penalized, post content to your site first. After a short waiting time, modify the article slightly and post to the major article distribution sites. Then you’re ready to distribute to second and third tier article distribution sites. Through this method you can enjoy the benefits of original content and all of the back links that come with it.

The first day of the Affiliate Summit expo welcomed thousands of affiliates, agencies, vendors, merchants and networks all converging at the Rio in Las Vegas for a jam-packed day of discussions, face-to-face meetings, and conferences. Some of the great benefits of the event for all those involved were:

Putting faces to emails: Being in the affiliate marketing industry, the majority of our communications with partners, merchants and networks is done via email and phone. In some cases, we have worked with partners and networks for several years, without ever meeting face to face. However, with the Affiliate Summit, AMWSO had an excellent opportunity to meet a variety of our long-standing partners and networks in person and put actual faces to the emails we contact virtually every week, such as Vinny Lingham CEO of Synthasite, Dan Foster, Account executive with Performics and Michael C. Jones, COO of Pepperjam Network.

Meeting new affiliates: A vital part of growing AMWSO programs is bringing new partners to our merchants and while many affiliates tend to be a quiet, rather secretive bunch, it was refreshing to have the chance at the Affiliate Summit venue to meet new affiliates in person in a wide range of verticals, who are looking to expand their revenue streams and bolster their commission incomes with the more than 35 merchants AMWSO manages.

Seeking new partnerships with CPA and up-and-coming affiliate networks: Another value from participating at Affiliate Summit is investigating new opportunities for AMWSO merchants that are not exclusive to their affiliate network, to reach out and expand their offering into the rapidly growing CPA and affiliate network space. Some of the interesting CPA and Affiliate networks at the event were Canadian Sponsors, an affiliate network focused on the Canada market and Revenue Loop, an affiliate network emphasizing transparency, and Affnet, a CPA network centered around financial and diet offers.

Regarding the conferences taking place at Affiliate Summit, one of the most exciting and interesting presentations was that of Will Reynolds, CEO of SEER, who talked about “How to Futureproof Your SEO Efforts”. Use this tool to start small and stay realistic in your SEO efforts.

MSN Ad Center Intelligence keyword research and optimization tool with Excel 2007 plug-in
Use this to create pivot tables and research popular terms with actual search volume numbers data and seamless integration with MS Excel 2007. (Note: the plug-in won’t work on older versions of Excel such as Excel 2003)

Google Trends
While Google trends doesn’t feature actual search and click volume numbers, it is a good start for identifying what people are looking for on SEs and what kind of content you can create to acquire new traffic sources.

Tube Mogul
One of the key advice from the presenation was to develop a “Digital Asset Inventory” such as videos. Use this tool to upload your video and distribute to many sites at once.

Yahoo Search Assist

This is a great tool on Yahoo results pages that include the terms and phrases you are looking for anywhere in the query. For example if you type in “Football” into Yahoo search assist, it will automatically suggest “Fantasy Football” because that is the most popular result clicked on for the term football.

Google Suggest
While not quite as intuitive as Yahoo Search Assist, because it orders suggestions based on the first keyword typed into the search box, it also can offer keyword directions for your SEO research.

According to Shawn Collin’s Affstat Report the average salary for an in-house manager is $50,000 a year and up. Now, factor in health and other benefits, desk space, infrastructure, those costs rise significantly. To support an in-house affiliate manager, a business must plan to spend at least $70,000 – $90,000 in overhead. If the in-house manager decides to leave the company, all of the knowledge and the relationship history usually walks out the door with the manager.

Additionally, it may be difficult to find an experienced affiliate manager within a specific geographical area. Some larger organizations leave the affiliate program in the care of a junior level marketing staffer. This can be a mistake with lasting consequences. A well run affiliate program can be responsible for 10-20% or more of overall company revenue. Likewise, with the advantages of added revenue and reach, there are dangers in not carefully managing an affiliate program. Brand messages may be damaged and revenue from other channels pillaged via malware and parasiteware.

Most OPM firms charge either a flat fee plus revenue share, or at least a monthly minimum revenue share. Generally the monthly minimum of flat fee is between $2000-$5000 a month.

Now also consider the other benefits an OPM brings: experience, relationships, knowledge, and stability. An OPM has established working relationships with many if not all of the top performing affiliates. They’ve built a history of performance, and generally an affiliate will know the style of any certain OPM such as does the OPM have a stance against parasiteware, or are they accessible?

In relation to the experience benefits, the cost savings strongly favor an advantage to outsourcing an affiliate program. Focus on the business, do what you do best, and leave the success and growth of a well-managed experience program to experts who are focused on growing your business.

Affiliate Marketing: Outsourcing (OPMs) is More Cost Effective Than Hiring In-House

Every now and then, we update the AdSense Terms and Conditions to make sure they’re in line with policies across Google, and to prepare for future changes to the products and services we offer. As part of these regular updates, you’ll soon sign in to your account and see that the Terms have been updated, prompting you to read through and accept them.

This time around, most of the changes to the Terms and Conditions fall into two broad categories: 1) future products and features and 2) privacy requirements. Specifically, one of the main changes is that the terms anticipate future products that may become available in other advertising formats and mediums, for example Gadget Ads. As we look forward to monetizing more online and offline content, we’ve re-worded some portions of the terms to make them applicable across a broader array of media and formats — anticipating, for example, that future products may be priced, paid, or managed differently than current ones.

We’ve also added some specific requirements that make it necessary for publishers to post and abide by a transparent privacy policy that users see. According to this policy, publishers must notify their users of the use of cookies and/or web beacons to collect data in the ad serving process. This change relates to advertisers’ use of innovative products and features like Gadget Ads and other offerings in the future.

The changes aren’t limited to the areas above, however; we’ve made small changes throughout, so it’s a good idea for you to review them thoroughly before accepting.

Updated Terms and Conditions

I was recently looking to buy tickets for a sporting event online. I knew exactly what event I wanted to attend, where the event was being held, and at what time. When I visited the particular site that listed the event, it didn’t provide clear ordering instructions. After studying the site for a few minutes, I found a place to buy tickets. When I clicked to buy the tickets, I was taken to a completely different website.
But wait, this consumer buying experience gets even better. After visiting this website, I had some difficulty finding the tickets I wanted. In fact, after numerous clicks, I did reach a purchase page. However, it offered 3 options and I couldn’t tell them apart. Other than the fact that the 3 options had different prices, I honestly didn’t know what they meant. So, did I buy? No. I got frustrated and threw in the towel. I guess I’ll just watch the event on TV.

I share this story because I’m not unique. Every day millions of consumers navigate away from websites for the very same reason. Many websites do a poor job of simplifying the purchase decision process. The result is often times a frustrated consumer and a lost sale. If you want to succeed online, make it easy for your customers to buy.

Not sure if your site does what it should? Gather a focus group, provide a discount for customer feedback, or test the complete purchase process on your own. Regardless of which method you use, make the purchase process simple and informative – you’ll be glad you did.

If you’re unable to get in touch with the reporter directly, leave a message – but be discreet. You don’t want to show all of your cards before speaking to him directly. However, if you leave enough information to get them to return your call, they will call you. Reporters follow up with any leads they consider opportunistic.

When leaving a message, simple say, “I have something you need to hear about (fill in name of story here).” Be specific with regard to the story the reporter is covering. You want them to consider your possible information valuable.

  • State your expertise. After complimenting the reporter about their coverage on a specific article or issue, let them know your position on a given topic and why you are qualified to comment on it. Give them your pitch and be confident that your opinion matters base on the experience you have to offer.
  • In today’s environment, it’s difficult to attract the media’s attention. The best way to get PR for your product or service is by commenting on current stories being covered by the media. The process is simple. When you hear a news story that you can comment on, find the reporter using Google and the name of a major publication.

    Read a few of the reporter’s previous articles for background and then contact him directly. Let him know that you have some information that he may find valuable or a comment relevant to the story. Be sure to provide him with your credentials. After just a few calls, you’ll be quoted in some of today’s leading media.

    We know that publishers are quickly adding video to their sites and looking for ways to earn additional revenue. If this sounds like you, look no further than AdSense for video, our solution for qualifying publishers. You may remember that we announced AdSense for video as a pilot last May.

    Since then, we’ve tested a variety of ad formats with the interest of users, publishers and advertisers in mind. As a result, we’ve decided that AdSense for video will use the InVideo ads adopted on our own property, YouTube, which enable advertisers to make a single buy at scale. Also competing in the auction – and unique to AdSense for video and AdSense video units – are text overlay ads which are contextually targeted to signals in your videos and on the page where the video lives.     As more publishers are being asked to complete the phone verification process, we’ve received a number of puzzled emails from our international community asking about the prompt to ‘press the pound key’. To clarify, the ‘pound key’ refers to the ‘#’ symbol (also known as the hash key), and not the ‘?’ symbol. The pound/hash key can typically be found below the ‘9′ key.

    This is the question that Lee McIntyre asks in his recently
    released e-book, Mailing Lists Unleashed
    (note: not an affiliate link).

    Lee makes the point as do other list building experts that
    you need to leverage the present to build the future.

    In other words, you should be focusing on building your list.

    This means that your Squidoo lenses (the more the merrier)
    should serve to capture subscribers to your email list.

    The reason – the real income is not in the one-off sale
    up front but the on-going sales from your list at the back end.

    If you simply send visitors to affiliate managers’ websites,
    you are building their list and business, not your own.

    It’s a simple but profound concept. I’ve heard it one more
    time but this time it seemed to have more impact. Lee
    emphasizes the need to build a sustainable internet business.

    Lee challenges many of the myths of list building. He argues
    that the money is not in the size of the list but in the
    relationship that you have with your subscribers.

    He attacks the myth that you should not give your subscribers
    lots of freebies because they will develop a “freebie mentality”.
    His own results from relatively small lists tend to contest
    this viewpoint.

    Lee’s Mailing Lists Unleashed (80 pages) is full of sound,
    practical advice about squeeze pages, confirmation pages and
    relationship building. His step-by-step, honest approach is
    really refreshing.

    For instance he reiterates the importance of having your
    squeeze page focused on benefits not features. He stresses the
    need to ensure that the squeeze page highlights the sign-up box
    and does not have distracting information or links.

    After reading this e-book I realized that I have lots of work
    to do to tidy up my squeeze page and improve my confirmation
    page. Lee makes the point that a minor change can improve
    your subscription rate immensely. Ten new subscribers a day
    is a lot better than 3 or 4.

    The other key thing that I have to do is to make sure that
    all my lenses promote subscription to my list(s) which are
    hosted on Aweber.

    So far I have found that Aweber is the best autoresponder
    for my mailing lists (after testing 5 others). Aweber’s
    service is outstanding.

    Ewen Chia reinforces Lee’s message. He suggests that effective
    list building and relationship building are two key features
    of Super Affiliates.

    I would recommend that if you do nothing else, you visit Lee’s

    newsletter (and associated freebies).
