In a recent forum thread, Kevin from ABestWeb asked fellow affiliates “What have YOU done to put value into a click today?”, implying that many affiliates are ignoring perhaps the most core aspect of affiliate marketing, marketing. His post, which can be viewed here, he reminds affiliates of the importance of “engaging sales copy, product placement, and product organization”, stating that “only value added affiliates that can drive sales”.

While perhaps undercutting the value of current affiliate trends such as datafeeds, widgets, keyword optimization, he does bring up a very good point, and one that is valuable to EVERY affiliate, no matter what form their promotions take: Putting more effort into the marketing side of affiliate marketing is better for all 3 parties involved (the affiliate, the merchant and the customer). When an affiliate better understands the needs of the customer and works to provide a referral that meets those needs, they will likely see higher conversion rates on click-through, while at the same time adding value for the customer and merchant by providing timely information and referral. When all parties in the process are satisfied, the relationship will naturally be stronger and more likely to last.

With that being said, here are a few strategies to improve your on site marketing, and put more value into each click:

1) Original product reviews - Consider approaching a merchant about sending you a product sample for trial and writing your own review. Original reviews will always be more compelling and genuine, and of course you probably wouldn’t mind receiving a free product in the mail sometime either…

2) Deep linking - Consider adding other links than simply links to your merchant’s home page. If the merchant does not have deep links available, why not write and request some? Most merchants and affiliate managers appreciate this type of feedback, and will do their best to accommodate you.

3) Change your offers / links regularly - Do you still have Easter promotions up on your home page? Well perhaps you’re not that sloppy, but have you considered building in a regular rotation into your banners? If you have a blog, keep in mind your regular readers will be seeing the same adds every day. Changing your ads can go a long way towards driving more clicks out of those eyeballs cruising through your content.

4) Use analytics to better understand your audience - If you’re not yet using Google Analytics, GET IT SET UP NOW. This is perhaps one of the best tools an affiliate can have at his/her disposal, and its available free. By studying which links your audience are clicking on, and which pages they spend the longest on, you will begin to understand your audience, and from there you can market much more intelligently to them.
