Fantasy sports is a lucrative niche industry–one that affiliates and advertisers need to take advantage of more aggressively. A new press release has revealed what many fantasy game enthusiasts already know; North Americans are on fire for fantasy sports. In a survey conducted by Ipsos, 11% of Americans and 10% of Canadians 12 years of age and older are fantasy sports players, with teens representing a higher number of participants.

Fantasy Sports Affiliate ProgramAccording to Ipsos research, “Consumers spend $800 million directly on fantasy sports products, but also use an additional $3 billion worth of media products related to the hobby (such as DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket and XM Radio’s coverage of all MLB baseball games).” It may not seem like news to fantasy sports players, but advertisers and affiliates are just becoming familiar with this vertical in online marketing.

Ipsos is just one of Share Results’ select merchants, but so is SportsBuff.com who launched an affiliate program in the Share Results network just last week. Their biggest season is fantasy football which kicks off this week, and affiliates are the ones to benefit most here now that we know fantasy sports “has a total market impact of $4.48 billion dollars.”

Though times may be tough economically for North Americans, but this hasn’t seemed to stop online sports interest. After all, no one has to pay for gas if they purchase products and services on the internet. ;)
