With the World Cup in full swing and almost half of the world’s population giving their attention to the event, it certainly hasn’t passed us by here at Share Results. Something that we’ve noticed is that there are a lot of lessons from the intense World Cup tournament that can be applied to affiliate marketing, so here are a few things that you can take from the World Cup and apply towards your affiliate marketing campaigns.

Run fast, and be accurate

Just like a soccer player, to win the game, you have to not only be fast, you have to be able to keep ahead of the competition, and when you are finally in position, you must be accurate, or you will give the ball to the other team.

Approach your ads as though you are getting ahead of your competition every time. This will put you in place, and then it will be up to your landing pages to be accurate enough to convert your sales.

Fancy can be dazzling, but fundamentals win the game

We have all seen those soccer players who can do amazing things with the ball, but when it comes down to it, what really wins soccer games is the fundamentals. In your affiliate marketing campaigns, concentrate on the fundamentals, like solid SEO, great copy and strong calls to action.

Stay onside

Just like in soccer, there are rules in affiliate marketing and it’s up to all of us to know and obey the rules. Some affiliates use black-hat SEO techniques to obtain traffic. It may work for a while, but eventually Google will notice. When a soccer player goes offside, the play is stopped by the ref and, even if they had a great chance of scoring, it’s all over. Obey the rules, stay onside, and you’ll play for long enough to put the ball in the net.

Loyal fans

Soccer players from all over the world get a huge boost from their fans and this energy often leads to goals from the energy they get from the crowd. If you can manage to get a good following online, then you’ll have a lot more opportunities to convert sales, and for affiliate marketers, that’s the name of the game.

Practice, practice, practice

You don’t get to be a soccer player on a World Cup team without hard work and dedication, and the same applies to affiliates. It sometimes takes years for an affiliate to reach their potential, but the ones who persevere and work hard at making their marketing campaigns the best are the ones who end up with that hallowed title of super-affiliate.

The one thing that I really love about the World Cup is that there is so much competition, yet there is a real feeling of unity, and that’s the kind of situation all affiliates should strive for. It’s healthy to maintain competition with other affiliates (especially for your bank account), but affiliates should never forget that they are, in the end, all a part of a system that works because of the cooperation that exists within the competition.

The rest of the World Cup promises to be incredibly exciting (my boys from the Netherlands are still unbeaten!). Whoever you’re rooting for, good luck to you and your team! Remember that if you keep your head down and follow a few simple rules, you could end up being the Ronaldo of affiliate marketing. It may, however, be a difficult feat to have hair as perfectly coiffed as his always appears to be.
