When it comes to best blogging practices, one of my favourite resources is Copyblogger. In fact, I took the format of this headline from some of their blog-writing tips: “[Fill in the Blank] That Everyone Ought to Know About”, because I trust that since it came from them, it might help my blog get some extra attention.

And that’s really the goal, isn’t it? Getting the most eyes on your blog, the most comments—and of course, ‘going viral’.

A lot of the affiliates that we work with in the Share Results network use blogs to generate traffic, and create a buzz around the product that they’re promoting.

We love blogging at Share Results, and because it’s a team effort, it’s always a lot of fun to bounce ideas off each other, and come up with some pieces that we feel are really going to be effective for our readers.

Most recently, our writing team teamed up with our SEO experts to present a training seminar on Best Blogging Practices. We got a lot of great feedback on this training, so we thought we’d include these tips on our blog to help out some of our blogging affiliates, and anyone else involved in blogging.

1. Make Sure Your Headline Rocks
In a world of RSS and Twitter feeds, where the headline of your blog is all you have to pique a reader’s attention, it’s so important that it be a good one. Take one of Copyblogger’s most recent blogs, for example: The Mr. Rogers Guide to Blogging from the Heart. I mean, as a blogger, I could barely click on the link fast enough. (Not to mention, I have a bit of special spot in my heart for Mr. Rogers). And really, that’s the effect you want to have every time.

A tip that I recommend when it comes to writing great headlines is, summarize your wow-factor. If one of the merchants you are promoting has a product that you have tried and made you look ten years younger, I suggest you get that in your headline—it’s your wow factor!

2. Hook Your Reader with a Great Lead
Ok. So you’ve managed to garner some reader excitement with your great wow-factor headline; next in line is your lead paragraph. In terms of best blogging practices, after the headline, your lead paragraph is the second most important element of your post. Readers are busy, and there is an abundance of really great blogs out there, so if they’ve given your blog a chance, based on your great headline, then the goal of your lead is to hook them into reading your whole blog.

Say something bold, get personal, expand on your wow-factor, but at all costs, engage your reader. Report on some unbelievable new research that is affecting the industry, the most interesting aspect of a product you’re promoting or state a product benefit that you know will be of interest to them. Whether you like to use humor, or prefer a more serious approach, be like Mr. Rogers, and convince your reader that what you’re about to share in your blog has real value, and that you care.

3. Keywords, Anchor Texting and Inter-Linking
Keywords are essential for obtaining blog traffic from search engines. Keywords should be incorporated into your headline, and then every 75-100 words in the blog post. In this blog, for example, I am using the keyword, “Best Blogging Practices”. You will find that keyword as part of my headline, and then I have used it throughout the rest of my blog. For best blogging practices, you also should bold your keyword on the second mention.

In addition to using keywords, interlinking to other blog posts should be done with every entry. You can use your own blog for this, and even link out to other blogs. You want to use an anchor text to link to the blog that uses your keyword from your article title, or if not, then a related keyword to the text of the entry.

4. Closing with a Strong Call to Action
A good call to action will not only prompt a reader to take the steps you are suggesting, but will get them to take that action NOW. You may want a reader to visit a merchant’s website, sign up to your newsletter, take a demo of your affiliate marketing software solution, or simply provide their feedback. Whatever it is, make it ridiculously clear what they are suppose to do, and what will happen when they do so.

Statistics show that incorporating “Click Here” into your Call to Action is the most effective way of getting readers to take the step you are suggesting. It’s even better if “click here” is at the end of the sentence, like this: “To sign up to my affiliate newsletter, click here.” But here’s the trick. Whatever link you use in your “Click Here” link in your Call to Action, HAS to also be used in the body of your blog, and must also be relevant to the page you are linking to. And a final word of caution here, I don’t recommend using this approach each and every time, as it can get a bit dry and predictable. So make sure to switch it up!

These are some of the best blogging practices that we try hard to incorporate into our Share Results blog. We’d love to know what practices have worked best for your blog. Tell us about them here! (That’s your cue to take action now!).

Best Blogging Practices That Everyone Ought to Know About

Post to Twitter Tweet This Post

Based on the book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, by Robert Fulghum

Share everything
One of the great things about the affiliate marketing community is that it really is a community. If you discover a new technique for online marketing that you’re finding successful, don’t be afraid to share it with your friends. In turn, they’ll share their tips to success with you, which makes everyone richer; figuratively AND literally.

Play fair
This can be a tough business, and the temptation exists to employ questionable techniques, like Black Hat SEO, for example. When employing these techniques, rest assured that they are very likely to come back at you with unfavorable results, eventually. Play fair, work hard, and reap the rewards.

Don’t take things that aren’t yours
As above, affiliate marketers who attempt to get their traffic by duping people into coming to their site most often end up bouncing a far greater amount of traffic than they convert. The rewards just aren’t there, especially when one considers the harm that this does to legitimate affiliate marketers. Trust is what motivates a sale, above all other conditions.

Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some
Incorporate that balance into the work aspect of your day as well. Endeavour, on a daily basis, to learn something new about affiliate marketing. Find out about new SEO practices. Discover how other affiliates are converting traffic. Read about website analytics; read someone’s affiliate marketing blog. Get to know your affiliate manager. Constantly test your methods of marketing and employ new ones to see what works best. Find the techniques that work best for you by constantly trying different things. It’s all about trying to achieve that balance.

Take a nap every afternoon
Seriously. Life as an affiliate marketer can be trying, so take a rest when you have a chance. When I was working as a full-time affiliate marketer I took a 45-minute nap every single day on my couch and it helped me get re-energized for the rest of my workday, no matter how much longer it was. We last a lot longer when we take the time to recharge our batteries.

When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together
Many of the people I know who are successful affiliate marketers have made a point of becoming active members in affiliate marketing communities. There are a lot of benefits to getting to know people that are also involved in this business, and I guarantee that you’ll be surprised at the amount of people who are willing to help you out. Of course, there are some who do not play well with others, but there always have been, and there always will be. Just seek out positive people who are headed towards success and you’ll be following in their footsteps in no time.

And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned – the biggest word of all – LOOK
I can never stress enough the importance of testing and then analyzing your campaigns. Use affiliate marketing software that lets you see track impressions, clicks and conversions. Having affiliate marketing software that provides you with in-depth analytics can make the difference between a lukewarm program and a red-hot one. Keep testing and analyzing, and never, ever take your eye off the prize. It’s there for you; all you have to do is reach out and grab it.

If anyone can think of a way to incorporate the “warm cookies and cold milk” part of this into an affiliate marketing strategy, let me know in the comments section below!

You may, from time to time see us refer to “creatives” on this blog. Enough people have asked us, “What are creatives?” that we have decided to launch a four-part series on what creatives are and how you can use them to help you build your business.

When we refer to a creative, we are talking about any advertising method by which you attempt to reach consumers. For example, the text in a PPC ad can be considered a creative, as could a Flash banner advertisement. Some creatives – mostly image creatives – are available directly from merchants, while others will be created by affiliates, or even a third party.

Essentially, anything that you do to market goods and services that requires imagination, artistry, innovation, and inspiration is a creative.  Everybody uses creatives in different ways, but they all fall into two basic categories: text and images.

In the first part of our series, we’ll look at text creatives and how they can help you reach your audience. We’ll talk about the importance of powerful PPC ads, and solid, relevant copywriting. We’ll also explore how SEO fits into the big picture, and how it can be used within your text creatives to reach your target audience.

In the next part, we’ll look at image creatives. We’ll explore what makes a successful image creative, where to place them on your website to get the best results, and some things to avoid.

And in the final part of the series, we’ll take a good, hard look at the value of monitoring your creatives and how tracking them can help improve your business. We’ll investigate how to use the Share Results software to help you get more information on what creatives are working for you, and how you can enhance your strategies in order to improve your conversion rates.

Come back tomorrow to read all about text creatives, and how to use them effectively. And be sure to get in on the conversation by leaving a comment or by sending us an email to let us know if you have any further questions.

In our first post in this series, we looked at the first steps of how to become an affiliate. We talked about the amazing income opportunities available to those willing to put in a little bit of effort, as well as a few of the different kinds of affiliates. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at a few of the different ways of marketing products as an affiliate.

So, what is the best way to start marketing products online? That’s going to depend on the individual. Everyone will have a different level of knowledge and ability, and there are various ways that people are marketing products as affiliates.

Specialized Website Affiliates

Perhaps you already have a website, or you’re planning one that has a specific focus. For example, you may have a site with articles on sports.  From there you might market different sporting goods, services, tickets, and even training. Regardless of the focus of your website, what’s important is that your content matches the products you’re promoting.

Blog Affiliates

Those who already have a blog will like that they can use it to start earning income.  For anyone interested in starting a blog, this is perhaps the easiest way to go about posting your own content on the Internet. There are several sites where anyone can sign up to start a blog, and post their content for free, like Blogger.com and WordPress.com.

There will be some trial and error in ascertaining what the most profitable affiliate programs are going to be when establishing a blog for this purpose, but it is a great way to get your feet wet. Try to express opinions about goods and services and then link to those products. There are lots of banners and text links available from merchants to help you get started. Once again, relevant content is best.

Community Affiliates

If you’ve ever been in a chat room and someone has posted a link to a site where they were selling a product, then you have already had an encounter with a community affiliate. This marketing tactic is often used in forums as well. This is not a method for those with thin skin, as it can result in abuse from other members of the forum or chat room, but if you’re willing to invest some time into becoming a trusted member of the community you’re targeting, the chances for success do exist.

In the next post we’ll be looking two more types of affiliates. Check back for more, and to find out more about how to become an affiliate, contact one of our affiliate marketing managers here. They have all the answers to help you become a successful affiliate marketer.

With so many affiliate programs available to choose from, it has become increasingly difficult to decide on one that is going to be best for you and your needs. There are several factors that make up a good affiliate program and one of them is transparency in tracking and reporting. This is just part of the message that we will be bringing with us to the Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas, which is being held from January 17-19, 2010.

In our last post on transparency, we explored the tools that Share Results provides to merchants and affiliates to expedite processes that lead to enhanced transparency. And in this post, we’re going to explore the processes whereby this is accomplished.

To keep track of creative, our software uses a simple pixel tracking system. Affiliate links contain two variables that track the traffic and transaction – their unique affiliate site ID, and the creative ID. When a visitor clicks on the affiliate link, a cookie is dropped on their computer, containing these two variables. Then, when the visitor completes a sale, an additional tracking pixel is fired on the merchant’s site, and the details of the sale, along with the affiliate’s site ID are automatically uploaded to the system reports.

And in the end, merchants and affiliates end up with a report that breaks the user interaction down from impression to eventual sale. Each side of the equation is able to see the results, creating a partnership of transparency between merchants and affiliates.

If visitors are not converting into sales or leads, then that is also tracked by the Share Results system. For example, if visitors are seeing the creative and then clicking on it, but are not purchasing the item, something is going wrong in the sales process. This information may encourage the merchant to revisit their sales funnel and landing pages, or look at the price of the item they are offering.

On the other hand, it may be that the affiliate is misrepresenting the saleable item, which causes people to lose interest once they come to the sales page. With the transparency on the sale journey, created in our system, merchants and affiliates can work together to achieve a solution to the situation.

To learn more about how our software works for you and can help you generate higher sales revenues, come and visit us at booth #413 at the Las Vegas Affiliate Summit, January 18th & 19th . We’re there to answer your questions about transparency in affiliate reporting as well as our affiliate management team that helps to facilitate this process.

Halloween 2009

Halloween is in two days and falls on a Saturday this year so the parties and get togethers will be in full swing. It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing a Halloween jam or giving out candies – dressing up in a costume can make it more fun and enjoyable.

So who will you be dressing up as this year? According to a recent article from MercuryNews.com, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Kate-minus-Jon will be some of the hottest costumes in 2009.

Halloween can also be a great time to start an affiliate marketing career. Brian G. Johnson from NetMarketingCourse.net said that:

“It is estimated that during the 2009 Halloween season, consumers will spend more than 7 billion dollars on costumes, candy, decorations and other assorted seasonal niche items.”

This can be a huge opportunity for new and established affiliates to generate revenue and ride strong into the holiday season.

Happy Halloween from the Share Results staff!

According to a recent article from eMarketer.com, the No. 1 metric of success for the marketing and sales managers polled was the number of new customers acquired. Lead generation and increased sales were also tracked by more than two-thirds of respondents.

This holiday season, it will be more of challenge than ever for retailers to attract new customers to both brick and mortar and online stores. That is not meant to imply that there will not be shoppers. In fact, Marketing experts National Retail Federation (NRF) have predicted that the holiday sales for 2009 will see flat growth largely due in part to the recent recession and consumers being much more money conscious.

So, there will likely be a bevy of shoppers this season, but a post-recession, research savvy new breed of shoppers, best described as the selective consumer. That means that this season, more than ever, it is important to stand out, and make educated decisions about where advertising money should be spent.
That means operators will have to roll out customized promotions that are tailored to their customers. More significantly, it means that the operators who can forge a relationship with their customer base will be those who succeed this Q4.

“Marketers have been aware of the effectiveness of building relationships and trust with content since long before the Internet,”

said Gordon Plutsky, director of marketing and research at King Fish, in a statement.

“Technological change has rapidly increased media channel options and the patterns of information consumption among consumers. More and more marketers are abandoning old media—and traditional advertising—to venture out on their own with original content.”

The marketers studied in the eMarketer.com article considered their corporate Website the best method for achieving their top goal of reaching prospective customers. Social media and custom content and media were not far behind.

As the shift into more in depth consumer research continues, this season will see more value shoppers who will browse research and compare products on the Internet using Social media. Consumers are using social media more to search for deals and coupons via Twitter and Facebook, so marketers may want to channel more resources into that avenue.

For more techniques, tools, tips and great resources to make sure you’re getting every last drop out of your affiliate marketing campaigns, be sure to come back to the Share Results blog (http://blog.shareresults.com/). Until November 27, Share Results (www.shareresults.com) is throwing a big Holiday Blogging Event, packed with all kinds of seasonal information regarding trends for Q4, tips to get the best deals, consumer trends and how best optimize your affiliate marketing campaigns.
