InternetMarketingClub.org Presents 10 Strategies to Make Social Media Make Money

I teach an Internet Marketing Course for the University of San Francisco. Several of the students have asked me how to put their knowledge to work and get a job in Internet marketing. Despite the tough economy, one sector that is still looking for good people is the internet.

My best thoughts on finding jobs in this economy are on our website and an internet marketing podcast I recorded with 10 job hunting tips.

The 2 best suggestions I could share with you are 1. the vast majority of jobs come from relationships and 2. the best thing you can do to get a job in internet marketing is to do work in internet marketing (freelance and volunteer work count). Let me explain:

1. Relationships. The first thing most managers do when hiring is ask staff and friends ‘Do you know anyone who is great at X?’ The last thing we do is spend money on recruitment advertising. I love hiring people that I have worked with through volunteer committees or people I know form industry events. Get busy connecting with old friends and make sure people know what you’re good at and what you’re looking for. Also, find an excuse to stay top-of-mind each month. I love to help people out, but I am busy – you need to remind busy people that you’re still looking.

2. I prefer to hire people with relevant experience and a great positive team-based attitude. We hired our Social Media Guru because she had a great can-do personality and a personal fitness blog that had higher ratings than our company blog. Companies were sending her free fitness products to sample hoping she’d blog about them. So how do you get real, relevant experience? Pick a cause that you are passionate about such as a local charity or non-profit and ask them how you could help. For example, the calls is doing some volunteer work for Rescue Rehab Home, a charity that rescues abandoned dogs. Volunteer for your local American Marketing Association or Interactive Marketing Association. Doing real interactive marketing work such as blogging, search engine optimization or social media (Facebook Fan Pages, YouTube videos, Twitter) is a great way to build your resume and show off your skills. Many hiring managers are likely in senior positions on the Board of Directors for these organizations. Or, do some freelance work to put on your resume. Websites such as www.Guru.com or www.eLance.com offer you the opportunity to make money doing real projects for real companies. Lastly – make yourself interactive! Create a great personal blog, make sure your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles are top notch. Google yourself to make sure there is lots of good news hitting the first page – if not get busy creating Social Media profiles to hit the first page of a search.

If you are looking, good luck for your job search and please let me know if there are other ways I can help. If you know someone who is looking for an internet marketing job, please share these tips and a link to our podcast with them. http://podcast.tengoldenrules.com/10goldenrules-podcast-episode32.html

How to get a job in Internet Marketing

Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s co-founders, sent the first tweet on March 21, 2006. Twitter hit a 10 billionth milestone late Thursday March 4, 2010 when someone clicked the update button. I could think of a hundred cool tweets number 10,000,000,000 could have been but unfortunately it appears the ground-breaking tweet was posted by someone who had set their feed to be private by default.
I’m the type of person that needs to know what the tweet said. I’m not asking for much Jack just a 140 character answer. We all know what the 5 billionth tweet said, “Oh Lord,” written by Robin Sloan. Anybody want to take a guess at what the 10 billionth tweet said? I’m thinking it could have been “If she admits the dinner she made tastes bad, do NOT agree. It’s a trick…”
I’m hoping the next milestone, 20 billionth tweet, is going to be a little more interesting. We only have to wait 188 more days to find out. I can see you’re impressed with my math skills – don’t be – I checked GigaTweet

To run a successful search engine optimization campaign, it is important to first clearly define the keywords to focus on. Simply trying to rank for a list of keywords you think are important is not always the best for your bottom line. You should be less focused on generating lots of traffic and more focused on generating revenue.

To develop your list of keywords to focus your efforts on, you want to consider a few things: how frequently are they searched, how competitive they are, and how well they convert for your business. Keyword research tools, such as Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, and Google Suggest are useful in determining how frequently keyword phrases are searched and how competitive they are. While this information is valuable in deciding which keywords present the greatest opportunities for optimization (high search frequency, low competition), you also want to determine which keywords are likely to generate a lead or a sale.

If you run a pay per click campaign, you have a head start in identifying your best converting keywords (as long as you are tracking conversions). Go through your campaigns and see which phrases have the highest conversion rate. If they convert well from pay per click, there is a good chance that they will convert well in organic search.

I dropped my iPhone yesterday and shattered the screen. I’ve dropped it numerous times in the past and nothing ever happened to it. I have to admit I didn’t realize how dependant I was on my iPhone until it went to the big tech graveyard in the sky. I used “her” for everything from accessing my email, Twitter, Google Buzz, Foursquare, and Facebook to name a few. Yes my phone is female and believe it or not I named her. I’ll give you a buck if you can guess her name correctly.

So I made an appointment at my local Genius Bar to get the screen replaced. I got there right on time and they were a little behind on their appointments. No problem I thought to myself and figured I could checkout the latest and greatest apps for the iPhone.
The latest and greatest I did not find during my search but I did find some interesting apps. Well I guess you could call them interesting…
iMated 2: Ever wondered what it’d look like if you and your friends mated? Yeah, us too. Question no more, because iMated makes it easy!

iPoo: Always find yourself with nothing to do while you’re sitting on the can? Introducing iPoo – a new iPhone application that gives you something to do – while you poo! iPoo is a social community that brings together pooers from around the world.
Note: there will be no clip showing how this app works.
iTrust: Does your girlfriend or boyfriend trust you, or do you think they read your texts and emails while you’re away from your phone? Start iTrust. Follow the simple instructions and leave it with someone you would like to test. If your test subject tries to access your phone while you are away. A log will be saved of the events that have taken place, and you can playback this log at your own convenience.

As part of Google’s latest Adwords interface, they recently introduced new functionality for analyzing your campaigns. This new functionality is included in a toolbar within the interface and allows you to segment and customize the data columns and graphs displaying your campaign data. This gives advertisers the ability to streamline their reporting so they can get the most out of their campaigns. This is just another move in the direction of making the old-fashioned reporting in which users actually have to run individual reports a thing of the past.

Google will be continuing to roll out more data types, to provide more in-depth analyses.

There are many things to consider about a page from which you are requesting a link from. Of course, you want to take into account the relevance of the page to yours, the quality of the backlinks of that page, the PageRank, etc. Another very important factor is co-citation, which refers to the outgoing links on the page.

When a page links to your website, the other websites the page links to say a lot about your website in the eyes of the search engines. Google considers websites that are linked to from the same page to be “related”. Ideally, all other links on the page would be to other websites that are highly relevant to yours. If a page links to your website and also a bunch of spammy sites, it can actually hurt your rankings.

Let’s say for example you have a website that sells diamonds. It will help your rankings to get a link on a page that links to other diamond websites. Even better, if the page links to a page about diamonds on a .edu domain, Google will consider your website similar to the .edu which carries a great deal of trust.

To see what other websites Google considers to be related to yours, enter the query “related:yourdomain.com” into Google search. If the websites returned are not similar to yours, you need to work on your co-citation.

Improve Your Local Search

Blogging has been around for quite some time now, and every day, someone decides to start a blog. There are many reasons why people start blogs – from wanting to share their daily lives with their friends (or complete strangers), to helping out others through the knowledge they have, and even to make money, there is a blog for that.

When starting a blog, or even if you are just thinking about starting one, the first thing that you should think about is – what is the goal of your blog? There should always be a purpose to doing something, just like in everyday life. Do you want to help others with your knowledge in SEO? Or, are you a photographer who wants to show off your latest photos? Are you a business that wants to promote your products? A defined goal is definitely important to have.

Once a goal is set, you will then have to figure out a name for your blog, figure out if you want to host it on a blog platform like Wordpress or Blogger. If you’re really serious about blogging, and you may not know right away, it will be best to buy a domain name (like a dot com) and web hosting. From there you can either set up your blog using the Wordpress platform or by using Blogger.com.

When your blog is set up, you can go ahead and start writing out posts. Another important part of blogging is planning out what you want to write about. Having a list of blog post ideas definitely helps. Adding relevant images to blog posts also livens up the post and makes it more appealing to read. It is also best to post frequently, so you have fresh content for your readers. Three to four times a week is recommended. Once you have about 15-20 posts on your blog, you can go ahead and promote your blog through Twitter, Facebook, and submit to Blog directories.

A blog is a commitment, just like any project. You may not get any comments on your blog at first, but as long as you update and promote your blog, people will slowly come to your blog. So make sure you keep at it!

It’s official… Not that we didn’t already know this, but Internet scammers will do anything to make a fast buck – even piggyback on one of the most devastating natural disaster to hit the Caribbean. Yes, the recent earthquake in Haiti has brought out an new crop of Internet scammers, according to the FBI.

So, if you want to donate online, how can you be sure your money will actually go to help the residents of Haiti? Google’s Official Haiti Earthquake Relief page lists a variety of reputable organizations that accept cash and in-kind donations.

According to a variety of reports, the earthquake completely destroyed eight hospitals in Port Au Prince, making it nearly impossible to them to treat those injured during the disaster. In the addition, the port was severely damaged, making it difficult for the coast guard, military and other help and support to land.

This video taken yesterday taken by Jose A. Iglesias of the El Nuevo Heraldin documents the death and destruction in Haiti. When I posted it to Facebook this morning, several of my Ohio friends commented, saying that the news has been sparse due to the difficulty news crews face getting to the island, and they had no idea the conditions in Haiti were so horrific. So, I wantedt o share it… However, I do need to warn you: This video is very graphic… but shows just how much they need your help right now in Haiti.

Don’t forget to donate…

It has been a tradition since the early 1900s to celebrate the famous “New Year’s Eve Ball Drop of Times Square.” But do you ever wonder how others around the world bring in the big day? There was a neat posting in the Bing Community today referencing just this. Did you know that the Japanese culture typically brings in the New Year by more calming activities such as cleaning the house? Check out Bing’s “New Year’s Around the World” for some amazing images.

So from New York to Australia [and everyone in between] and however you prefer to bring in the New Year — may it be a prosperous one for all!

When setting up a pay per click advertising campaign, a very important key to success is to break your campaigns into tight, granular ad groups. One way to carefully segment campaigns is to identify customer personas.

As internet users, we don’t all search for the same products and services the same way. Different demographic groups may use slightly different search phrases and respond differently to offers. For this reason, it is important to understand what groups would be interested in your product or service and how to speak to them through your advertising.

Identify your customer subsets and give them names (i.e. high school students, soccer moms, etc). Think about the words each segment would search that would result in a sale/lead. Set up a different ad group for each customer segment and focus on the phrases that specific group would likely search. This will also allow you to present different ad copy/creative and landing pages to each segment.

Trendspotting Market Research came out with a report about predictions for social media trends in 2010. I found it interesting that the predictions were in 140 characters, Twitter style. It definitely makes it easy to read. From this report, the major trends predictions in 2010 were suggested as mobile, location, transparency, measurement, ROI and privacy.

Some of my favorite predictions included:

  • “Mobile becomes a social media lifeline.”
  • “Companies get serious about social media, elevating their focus to social business.”
  • “By the end of the year we’ll have a new interface for status updates that looks nothing like a microblog.”
  • “Search will get more social: real time content in results, information from social network friends to results, using collective information from other web users.”
  • “Social media in 2010 will cease being the shiny new object and instead, become part of the everyday lexicon on business.”
  • “We’re going to see an explosion of things that use location.”
