You may remember that we had a contest in which we gave away three Silver Passes to the Affiliate Summit East this year. One of our winners was Cathlyn Cathlyn_Driscoll_ContestDriscoll of Best Business Mastery, an affiliate site dedicated to providing marketing advice and support.

I had a chance to chat with Cathlyn after the conference, and was pleased to find out that she had a great time there, learned a lot, and made some great connections. Here’s what she had to say after the Affiliate Summit.

Mark John Hiemstra: What was the best part of the conference for you this year?
Cathlyn Driscoll: Actually, just attending for the first time was great and watching and listening to everything I could – I eavesdropped on many a convo!

MJH: Did you make new contacts?
CD: Yes! And I found out there are some services which might help me with my business that I didn’t know existed before.

MJH: Who were you excited to have met?
CD: Well, I didn’t want to act like a ‘fan’, but I was extremely excited to finally see Jeremy Shoemaker, aka Shoemoney- in person and also Sugarrae and GreyWolf. Funny to be following these guys on blogs and Twitter for years and finally be in the same room with them. Oh- and John Chow as well, not to mention Shawn Collins.

MJH: What are you taking away from the conference this year?
CD: Really, I came away with the fact that being successful in the affiliate field is really up to me. I met a woman who started part time in the affiliate field and now is doing this full time. This is like a dream for me. She mentioned that she will be at the Vegas Affiliate Summit- so there is something to this- learning from others who have had success themselves.

If you were at the Affiliate Summit, let us know about your experiences in the comments section. We had a great time there, and our team members will be letting us know about their experiences over the next few days, so stay tuned!

We wanted to give you all a heads up about a new Google blog that is focused on helping small businesses grow. Check out their first post below and visit googlesmb.blogspot.com to follow their future posts and updates. -ed.

Most every business, including ours, starts small. These days, technology is giving businesses even more ways to grow bigger… faster.

In our recent Small Business series on the Official Google Blog, a handful of real-life entrepreneurs have shared their experiences building companies from scratch and embracing Internet tools that have taken their businesses to the next level. We’ve received fantastic feedback about these posts, and realized that there’s a healthy appetite among small- and medium-sized business owners who want to know all about the latest web tools and tricks. Fortunately, we have lots more to share with you, too!

That’s why we’re introducing the Google Small Business Blog, a central hub that brings together all the information about our products, features and projects of specific interest to the small business community. Rather than having to sleuth around in many different locations for details about templates for creating video ads on YouTube, tips for your employees using Gmail or how to respond to the business reviews on your Place Page, you can find all of this helpful information right here in one place.

Of course, we’ll continue to post relevant news about individual services such as AdWords, Apps, Google Places and YouTube on their respective “home” blogs, but feel free to visit or subscribe to the Google Small Business Blog to get everything relating to your small business needs. We’re starting small today, but who knows what tomorrow will have in store!

This is another virtually pointless post, yes. I’ve promised posts and more frequent posting and just haven’t lived up to it.

I’m just making this post to say: I still have plans on blogging more in the future. I’ve learned A LOT of information that I can definitely share. Right now I’m just too busy to really think about anything else but my main projects. A project 5 months into the making is going to launch in the near future (for real this time) so it’s like cramming for finals week in my head right now.

Once things cool down I’ll be able to relax and get to blogging more. Priorities folks…gotta win the bread.

This post will be totally useless without some usable piece of affiliate marketing information so here it goes: something I’ve been experimenting with in a few small affiliate side projects is collecting email address information and THEN shooting them to the affiliate offer (”You’re getting a free [blah blah], just enter your name and e-mail address to continue!”). It seems there are quite a few people out there doing this. E-mail them with some “Welcome” packet of affiliate offers, sub them to your list and just mail out more affiliate offers. Plus make commissions off whatever offer you send them to after you capture the name/email. There’s almost always higher payouts for email only offers too. Something to think about and test.

Sorry for being lame.

affiliates-taxesIn a letter to Jean-Baptiste Leroy, Benjamin Franklin famously said, “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Even though you might not always be assured of conversions that lead to be commissions, what you can be sure of is that any money you earn as an affiliate is taxable income.  If you don’t declare this income, it’s entirely possible that, someday, somebody’s going to come knocking on your door wondering why you haven’t given the government its cut.

We’re not tax experts here at Share Results, but many of us have been involved in some kind of entrepreneurial enterprise in one form or another, and have had to deal with the resulting taxes. Here are a few points that have been assembled from members of our team to give affiliates a little bit of advice on how to handle taxes.

Remember that affiliate marketing is a business

Any time a person makes money through a business venture of any kind, it is incredibly important to declare that income at tax time. Even if it’s not enough to put you into another tax bracket, the best thing we can suggest is to always be honest with your government’s revenue agency.

The reason being is that affiliates often start out slow before they become successful. Once you start to earn enough money for the government to want its cut, it’s best to make sure that you have been honest all along, so that there are no discrepancies in your earnings.

Be prepared

Recognize that any income that you receive will be taxed. To avoid having to pay a lot of taxes all at once, it is a good practice to put some money aside as it comes in, so that you will be ready at tax time. Some people like to put these funds in a high-interest account, so that they’re earning a little bit of interest while waiting to use the money to pay for taxes.

Not doing so could result in you not being able to meet your tax obligations in a timely fashion, which could result in monetary penalties. Nobody wants to pay interest on tax money, so be sure to be prepared for the inevitable.

To know how much money you have earned from the Share Results program, simply log in to your affiliate account and navigate to the payment history section. You can produce a report here that will show you your income over a specific period of time, which will allow you to find out how much you earned over a specific calendar year. For more information, contact your affiliate manager, and they will be happy to go over everything that you need to know.

Read the Terms and Conditions

Every program or network handles taxes in a different way. In some states, there is an obligation for networks to deduct taxes from affiliate earnings, while in most others affiliates are payed directly and it is up to them to declare the income. It’s extremely important to read the Terms and Conditions of any program you belong to and make sure that you are aware of the tax laws in your state or province.

Reducing the obligation

Once your business starts to grow, you should look into ways that you can reduce your tax payout. Like any business, you can write off expenses, so be sure to save receipts that can be used to lessen your tax obligation. There are also other techniques that can be put it into effect, depending upon the size of your business. To find out what methods you might be able to employ, it’s best to refer your questions to someone who makes their living dealing with tax issues.

Talk to a tax professional

In order to be absolutely certain that you are handling your tax obligations correctly, the very best thing to do is to talk to a tax professional. A Chartered Personal Accountant (CPA) should have all of the answers that you are looking for, and can often advise you on the best ways to handle your business taxes. If possible, find out from other affiliates in your area if there is a CPA that they can recommend.

You may also be able to find out some information from your affiliate manager. If you are in a different country from a program that you belong to that is generating your income, you’ll want to find out what that is going to mean for your business.  The best way to find out is to refer your questions to a professional.

Once again, we are not tax professionals, but we do think that it is important that affiliates know that there is a responsibility to pay taxes on earnings, and to be prepared for that eventuality. With help from a professional accountant, or other tax professional, you’ll be able to find out the best way to ensure that you are paying your taxes properly, and keeping as much of that money as you can.

If you have any information on how you manage your taxes that you want to share with other affiliates, be sure to leave us a comment below. If you have links to places where affiliates can find out more information, feel free to leave those as well.

*Spoiler alert*

So after six seasons, LOST finally concluded last night. I started watching the show three weeks before this season, I got through all of the prior five seasons in that time. Once I started watching, it seemed to get more and more confusing but I just wanted to see how the show was going to end. I wanted all the questions that had been building up to be answered. What was I left with? …Nothing.

When I first started watching, I thought it was going to be just a shipwrecked trapped on a deserted island show…cool idea. Then they bring in polar bears, Dharma, time travel, and all sorts of crazy sci-fi elements…I was loving that. In the end, they explain none of it. At the start of Season 6 they create this “side flash” storyline. The whole season everybody is wondering what that even means, but I think all of our heads were still more curious about the island. What was the black smoke? What’s really special about the island? We’re told this last season would “reveal all”, but it seemed to just keep stringing along this side flash plot-line. This all builds up to the final episode where all they do is close out the weird side flash storyline they created. How do they close it out? Oh, they’re just all dead no big deal. WHAT??!?!?!

I’m sitting there wondering :

  • What is the purpose of that black smoke?
  • How did EVERYONE else die? It’s not just Jack in that church, it’s everyone who appeared to escape on the plane too.
  • How did man in black turn into the smoke monster instantly after being thrown into that well, and why?
  • What were all the weird symbols and markings?
  • Island moving? Time travel? Yeah none of that explained.
  • Dharma Initiative? They started going into that hardcore I think the second season, and then just dropped it.
  • How is Richard immortal, and then why is he mortal in the end?
  • WTF is the light in the center of the island?

These are just questions that are coming off the top of my head. I thought it was awful to just end the finale with a 2 and a half hour reunion only to find out that they’re all united in death. Seriously…they’re all dead?

I feel like I wasted so much time on this show, anybody saying it was a great finale has become just to emotionally attached to all the characters that anything would seem good. Even them all…being…dead.

Except for Ben, but they don’t explain that either. He’s just chilling outside the church that’s in…purgatory? Earth? Where the hell are they that once they walk into a church they get to walk into heaven or wherever that white light leads?

Seriously people…you cannot be happy about this ending. If you are, you’ve been duped hard.

Janet Fouts, author of Social Media Success!, and Beth Kanter, author of The Networked Nonprofit, have recently collected a selection of ‘how to’ tweets related to social media and non-profits, and compiled them all in #SOCIAL MEDIA NONPROFIT tweet. I got a copy of the book yesterday, and it’s a quick read, as the authors’ intended, but chock full of inspiration.

A few of my favorites:

“Focus on sharing your cause. The money will follow.”

and

“Create a relationship first, and then ask for support.”

This is a great book for traveling, or if you’d like to see bite-size examples of successes in non-profit social media.  Either way, I’m recommending this one, especially if you’re involved with a non-profit.

With Mother’s Day coming up, we wanted to profile a working mother who is a member of the Share Results network. I knew that this would be an enjoyable task, but I hadn’t counted on having the opportunity to have an afternoon chat with such a, well, motivated mommy.
A few days ago I had a long conversation with Tina Vega, the visionary behind Motivated Mommies.com. Her website is currently in the final stages of creation, and will be launched, aptly enough on Mother’s Day (May 9) of this year.

MotivatedMommies.com will be a resource for mothers who are looking for opportunities for employment; specifically those who wish to work from home. In addition, it will feature links to online educational opportunities, such as what one would find at eLearners.com, which is how Tina came to be an affiliate of the Share Results program, as well as a desire to work with Project Working Moms.

Many mom websites consist of boutique shopping or blogs. Motivated Mommies is unique in that it is really providing stay-at-home moms with the resources to earn a living at home. She’s also providing them with the resources to get out of the house and go to work, should they choose to do that as well. For Tina, her site is about empowering moms to make informed choices that will better their lives and those of their families.

Tina has a background in Administration, and is no stranger to the business world. When her first daughter was born, she made the decision to leave her job and stay at home with her. Soon after that, her search for stay-at-home employment began.

Overcoming Fear
Tina thought of the name of her website about four or five years ago, but it took her a while to go through with actually setting it up. “There was a lot of fear in the beginning, because there weren’t a lot of mom’s websites. When I would talk to people about building a mom-based website,” Tina said, “they would say, ‘What do you mean a mom’s website? What is that?’”

However, as the years passed, more and more moms got out there and started websites directly as resources for other moms and to keep in touch, to share the simple joys, hilarious calamities, never-ending frustrations and eventual triumphs with other mothers.
It makes sense, as a recent study shows that women are far more social on the Internet than men. Venues where mothers can provide other mothers with support have become enormously popular, and with good reason.

Now when Tina mentions that she is building a mom-centric website, the questions are about what genre of mom-based website she’s building, as opposed to what it is going to be about as a whole.

Finding the Motivation
“My sister and I were trying to find ways to stay at home with our kids, and it was very frustrating. We took a lot of chances and tried to find businesses that would advertise that you could work at home, and we would spend 50 dollars hoping we would get something in return. Sometimes we would get a booklet or a list of companies, but those companies would be out of business, or they wanted more money. And it was very frustrating, so we kind of gave up on that particular situation.”

Not the type to be easily dissuaded, Tina started looking for part-time jobs that she and her sister could do, where they could watch each other’s kids while the other was working.

“For me, it was all about the motivation,” Tina says. “And that’s when the name of my website dawned on me: Motivated Mommies. If I was in this situation, if my sister was in this situation, then more than likely there were tons of other moms in the same situation.” Tina started noticing more and more websites in which people were talking about this very thing.

Finding Balance
motivated-mommies-tina-vegaTina has two girls, who are six and nine years old. For Tina, the biggest challenge is balancing her home life with the challenges of getting her website set up. “I feel like there are days when I’m working and trying to build the website, my house is a mess. If my house is clean, I didn’t get to work on the business,” Tina said.

Between the time that she spends on the phone and emailing, doing research and collecting information, spending as much time as she would like to with her kids is not as easily accomplished as she might like it to be. It’s a temporary conundrum, she predicts, with the goal of putting the finishing touches on her website, and then getting back to a more regular schedule.

“Once it’s done, I’ll be working on the business when the kids are at school, then a full-time mom when they’re at home. I just don’t want to miss out on any of this time, because it just moves so quickly.”

Inspiration
More than anyone in her life, Tina’s biggest inspiration is her mom, whom she lost to cancer when she was 15 years old. “Watching her be a cheerleading coach and coordinator, working full time and still being an awesome mom and wife, all while fighting cancer, helps me find the strength to be a full-time mom and wife, while building a business.”

And clearly, Tina learned a lot from her mom. Tina still finds time to volunteer at her kids’ school twice a week and is involved in their extracurricular activities, even while in the process of building this website.

And this is one of the things that impressed me most about Tina; her drive to balance her home and family life with work. Earning money is a necessary thing for all of us to survive, and earning a lot of money is a wonderful thing. It’s moms like Tina and her own mother that teach us the most valuable lesson of all: That time with family is more precious than all the gold in Fort Knox.

Offering Hope

“The reason I’m building this site is not just to offer resources to moms, but, more importantly, to offer reputable resources. I’m not going to have any resources on the website that require money up front to enquire about the business,” Tina said.

Tina will be working with direct-sales consultants who are not hidden behind a P.O. Box. All direct-sales offers will have links to an actual website, phone number and person to talk to about the opportunities presented. This way, those interested can get all the background information required before deciding whether or not to work with that company. This will be true of all of the resources presented on her site, including links to online education and other job opportunities.

“There are so many websites out there, and they say that they’re run by moms, and they’re actually scams,” Tina said. “I just couldn’t believe that a mom would do that to another mom. To me, that’s where my frustration comes from and that’s where my motivation comes from.”
The message that Tina wants to get across by presenting these resources is that it is possible for moms to stay at home with their kids, and there are ways to have the life that you dream of having. With the research that Tina has done, her site is sure to be a great resource for moms.

Tina’s words of advice for moms who want to work at home? Tina says, quite simply, “Go for it. There are plenty of resources, and plenty of help out there, it’s just a matter of reaching out to other people. It is possible.”

A Bright Future for Affiliate Marketing
With motivated moms like Tina, there is a very bright future for affiliate marketing. With the credibility that someone like Tina brings to the table, businesses that she lists as trusted partners are sure to reap the benefits of being recommended by someone with the experience that Tina has.

More and more women are seeing the Internet as a source of revenue. You’ll not find a more dedicated, committed and hard-working group than mothers. They’re not afraid of rolling up their sleeves and doing the work required to get a task done. More importantly, you’ll not find a more tight-knit community willing to help and support each other.

That’s why websites like Tina’s are so important, and why MotivatedMommies.com is certain to be as successful as many of the other mom-centric websites that are already out there. They demonstrate positive steps forward, not just for moms, but for the online marketing industry as a whole.

Happy Mother’s Day!
From all of us here at Share Results, we want to wish all of the mothers out there a very, very Happy Mother’s Day.
Don’t forget to visit MotivatedMommies.com on Mother’s Day and check out all of the resources that Tina has to offer. Having had a sneak peek, I can tell you that you that, if you are looking for the kinds of resources that Tina has to offer, you’ll be very glad you did.

In this ‘off the record’, or ‘unattributed’, or whatever you want to call it, Tweet, Nick Bilton gets the nitty-gritty on how Zuckerberg feels about user privacy.  Now, to be fair, I’m sure he’s not totally against some user privacy, but it’s the internet people!  Other than your date-of-birth, emails, social security number, and your address/phone number, nothing you put on the internet really needs to be private.

Less private content means better archival options (I can link directly to what you said), transparency among identities, and less trollery.  Remember, anonymous comments are the bane of the internet, and in no way contribute to a discussion.  Making real people, with real identities, a possibility means we can really cut down on asshats and spam, and that’s what all this Identity 2.0 stuff is trying to do.

My two cents… Don’t expect anything on the net to be private. If you want to keep your opinions to yourself, don’t post them to Twitter or Facebook. If you feel the need to only share them with a handful of people, just group text them or email them. Otherwise, I see no problem w/Facebook, or any company, pushing the limits of so-called privacy on the net a bit. Remember, Blippy couldn’t even keep your Credit Cards safe (Techmeme), so you should assume that if your content is out there, it may one day see the light.

Well, this was an update over 2 years in the making. Yep, the last time I updated my Affiliate Marketing Guide was in April of 2008. You can imagine a lot of things have changed since then, a lot of the links were dead/irrelevant.

I’ve scoured quite a few industry blogs and looked at the past year or so of content and was able to find some good picks. I’ve added some new categories to keep up with the times (PPV is a popular category now). The more recent articles I popped in at the top. You can view the guide here.

The Most Important Part

So, I’m sure I missed a bunch of great articles. This is where it’s your turn to add to the guide, almost like a Wiki or something. If there’s a good article relating to any of the categories of the guide, post it as a comment here and as long as it’s good, I’ll add it to the guide. Thanks!

Know what you want…

Seems simple right? In my experience, dealing with hundreds of clients over the last 12 years, very few can actually quantify what they want.

Some tell me they want marketing help (far too vague), but when I ask about success metrics, they almost invariably cite traffic as their primary success measure. Now, not to discount traffic, but that’s not what pays the bills is it?

ROI shouldn’t be calculated on traffic*, but by counting other other measures. If your aim is engagement, count comments, reviews, buzz. If your aim is sales, count overall revenue increases, direct conversions, increase of average sales…

In an SEM campaign in particular, knowing what you want is vital, because every click costs you. Your campaigns should be highly segmented, helping you know where each dime goes, how each ad performs, how each keyword you’re buying contributes to the goals you’ve set.

Search Engine Guide has an excellent post up today about segmenting your keywords:

There are four distinct keyword segments each representing a different phase of the searcher’s buying cycle. After going through the process above you should be left with one or more groups of keyword that can be optimized into a page or several pages. The next step is to take each group and segment them even further based on those keyword segments.

Once you know what you want, you can do A/B testing to determine where your money’s going and whether or not your plan is working.  Know what you want and you have a heck of a lot better chance at getting it.

*there are a few, rare exceptions to this rule
