When it comes to revenue, some statements are not only worth thinking about, but are worth re-reading several times. The first quote came a few days ago from Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, who said,

“Trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of the Android activities and a whole bunch more.”

That “whole bunch more” should lead readers to take a closer look at the mobile ad market. Of the four largest smart phone OS providers: RIM (Blackberry), Google, Apple, and Nokia, Blackberry appears to be the only one without a clear profit plan in mobile advertising. It’s no surprise then that Blackberry is looking to buy their way in, as reported in the Wall Street Journal here.

It’s old news that Google paid $750 million to acquire AdMob and that Apple scooped up Quattro Wireless Mobile for $275M. But few know that Nokia launched its own mobile network back in 2008. Although Nokia may be in the game it has not had the same smartphone success in the United States, the hottest mobile advertising market.

AdMob, acquired by Google, is currently the largest mobile ad network, estimated by International Data Corporation (IDC) to control 21 percent of the market, with Millennial Media, the apparent target of Blackberry mobile ad growth plans at 12 percent. Yahoo and Microsoft are in the game, but trail at 10 percent and 8 percent respectively.  AOL, which bought former market leader Third Screen Media in 2007, is no longer a factor.

If there is any trend, it’s that mobile advertising is less of a web portal game, and more of a mobile OS game.

One key reason that mobile OS providers are more relevant in this market is that they can change the economics of the carrier phone relationships. What if, instead of carriers paying a subsidy for phones on their networks, the carriers were paid, not once, but over and over again for the life of that phone on their network? Wouldn’t that be more attractive? That’s exactly how Google has changed the game - by sharing revenue with carriers.

This could be lucrative for carriers and could easily influence device selection and promotion. Who has the most to lose, is Nokia and RIM as they dominate smart phone unit sales, but Nokia already owns an ad network, they just have to execute. Blackberry, then, better get its act together, and soon. Not only do they risk missing out in revenue, but their distribution channel with the carriers could be negatively impacted.

To put the opportunity into perspective, I’ll close with the second quote made on CNBC’s Mad Money, where in 2008 Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that,

“Mobile computing alone will bring in more money than the company’s desktop business.”

If he meant what he was saying, Schmidt sees mobile advertising as larger than the approximately $6 billion a quarter that Google currently earns from web-based advertising. Now that’s a quote worth thinking about.

With the World Cup in full swing and almost half of the world’s population giving their attention to the event, it certainly hasn’t passed us by here at Share Results. Something that we’ve noticed is that there are a lot of lessons from the intense World Cup tournament that can be applied to affiliate marketing, so here are a few things that you can take from the World Cup and apply towards your affiliate marketing campaigns.

FIFA World Cup

FIFA World Cup

Run fast, and be accurate

Just like a soccer player, to win the game, you have to not only be fast, you have to be able to keep ahead of the competition, and when you are finally in position, you must be accurate, or you will give the ball to the other team.

Approach your ads as though you are getting ahead of your competition every time. This will put you in place, and then it will be up to your landing pages to be accurate enough to convert your sales.

Fancy can be dazzling, but fundamentals win the game

We have all seen those soccer players who can do amazing things with the ball, but when it comes down to it, what really wins soccer games is the fundamentals. In your affiliate marketing campaigns, concentrate on the fundamentals, like solid SEO, great copy and strong calls to action.

Stay onside

Just like in soccer, there are rules in affiliate marketing and it’s up to all of us to know and obey the rules. Some affiliates use black-hat SEO techniques to obtain traffic. It may work for a while, but eventually Google will notice. When a soccer player goes offside, the play is stopped by the ref and, even if they had a great chance of scoring, it’s all over. Obey the rules, stay onside, and you’ll play for long enough to put the ball in the net.

Loyal fans

Soccer players from all over the world get a huge boost from their fans and this energy often leads to goals from the energy they get from the crowd. If you can manage to get a good following online, then you’ll have a lot more opportunities to convert sales, and for affiliate marketers, that’s the name of the game.

Practice, practice, practice

You don’t get to be a soccer player on a World Cup team without hard work and dedication, and the same applies to affiliates. It sometimes takes years for an affiliate to reach their potential, but the ones who persevere and work hard at making their marketing campaigns the best are the ones who end up with that hallowed title of super-affiliate.

The one thing that I really love about the World Cup is that there is so much competition, yet there is a real feeling of unity, and that’s the kind of situation all affiliates should strive for. It’s healthy to maintain competition with other affiliates (especially for your bank account), but affiliates should never forget that they are, in the end, all a part of a system that works because of the cooperation that exists within the competition.

The rest of the World Cup promises to be incredibly exciting (my boys from the Netherlands are still unbeaten!). Whoever you’re rooting for, good luck to you and your team! Remember that if you keep your head down and follow a few simple rules, you could end up being the Ronaldo of affiliate marketing. It may, however, be a difficult feat to have hair as perfectly coiffed as his always appears to be.

Do you develop or publish web-based games? If so, you’re contributing to a growing trend – according to comScore, over 25% of Internet users play online games every week, which is over 200 million users worldwide. As a beta user of AdSense for Games, you can display video ads, image ads, or text ads within your online games to earn revenue. You’ll be able to show these ads in placements you define, such as interstitial frames before a game, after a level change, or when a game is over. Members of our AdWords team will sell your in-game ad placements directly to top brand advertisers, and you’ll also see contextually targeted text and image ads based on content and demographic information. In addition, you’ll be able to control the ads you see on your pages using our filtering options.

Here’s a quick video to give you a better idea of what games are part of our network and how advertisers can use this medium to reach their target audience:

And here’s another, less flashy video, to show actual game play and how an ad could appear within the game:

We’ve built ad technology for games played within a user’s browser, and now we’re looking to expand our publisher network. At this time, eligible publishers must have a minimum of 500,000 game plays and have 80% of their traffic from the U.S. or the U.K. If you’re interested in becoming a AdSense for games beta publisher, feel free to review our complete list of requirements and submit an application. You can also find more information on our games site.

From time to time, I hear from a number of individuals seeking marketing advice for their home based business. I recently had an opportunity to ask Work from home expert Stone Evans for his tips on creating a successful home business. Here’s what he had to say…
“If you are going to have a successful home business, you need 3 “intangibles.” These are things that must come from WITHIN you.”

Intangible 1

First, you must have a strong WHY.

Why MUST you have a successful home business? What is driving you? What is it that you CAN’T have in your life anymore and/or what is it that you absolutely MUST HAVE now?

For me, I couldn’t stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and missing the experience of my children growing up. I also absolutely HAD TO HAVE the freedom of being able to control my life and finances through a little box (laptop computer) that I could carry with me anywhere in the world and not be tied to anyone’s time pressures or demands but my own. That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a great pain deep in my gut of missing out on my children’s lives and the incredible freedom that succeeding in a home business would provide for me. I found my why. You MUST find yours.

Intangible 2

You must BELIEVE that it is possible. If you don’t believe that it’s POSSIBLE for you to have a successful home business or make your living from home, you won’t. It’s that simple. For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money working from home.

If they could do it, I could too. It would just be a matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then adapting it to my situation. There is no shortage of undeniable PROOF that people (millions of them) are making money working from home. Just get online and do some research and you’ll find countless testimonials and stories of REAL PEOPLE making real money on the Internet. Or head to your local bookstore and you’ll find the same documented evidence of this fact.

Truth is, it’s getting easier and easier to make money with your own home business. I’ve always said that “affiliate marketing” (a simple way to make money from home) is the job of the future. In the “old” days, you had to go to a potential employer, apply for the position and hope for the best. Now you can simply go to any company you want, fill out their affiliate application and start work immediately. Affiliates are the new working class. In fact, making money with affiliate programs or making your living on the Internet is WAY MORE than possible. It is pretty much (or will be soon enough) unavoidable now. Affiliate marketing is the “job” of the future that’s already here TODAY.

Intangible 3

You must be willing to MAKE THE LEAP. Ready, FIRE, then aim… This is the operating philosophy you MUST adopt to succeed with a home business. That’s backwards for most people who like to aim before they fire. The fact is that home business success is a moving target… The only thing constant about it is change. You need to stop analyzing the game and simply jump into it. You can’t learn from the outside… You have to be IN THE RING to truly understand it. The lesson here is that you will never really be READY to start a home business. You simply have to start one. It’s like having children… You’re never really ready, but when it happens you adapt and grow.

This is what I call “Making the Leap.” The good news is that the cost of failure with having your own home business is very small. In the “brick and mortar” world you need to evaluate things very carefully before you decide to open up a business. It’s almost always necessary to invest thousands of dollars to get an offline business off the ground. However, on the Internet you can often start a successful business for less than $100.

The Plug-In Profit Site is a great example of this: http://www.HomeBusiness.us You simply need get IN THE GAME… Each moment that you stay “out there,” you’re wasting valuable time that you could be learning and skills necessary to build a successful home business. In fact, if you’re not in the game yet, you’re ALREADY behind the times. Make the leap to creating a successful home business today!
