favicon support has recently been added, which to some may add a little more personality to his or her subscriptions. There have also been a few other additions such as “sort by magic” and “recommended sources.” Of course, the more you allow Google to study your reader habits, the more personalized these results appear for you.

Another really helpful feature I have been using more of lately is the “send to” ability. You can access this feature by going to settings -> send to. This feature gives you the ability to share a post from a specific site by the click of a button from within your reader as opposed to having to go to the actual website. For example, if you have a subscription to a site and upon reading a blog post you think to yourself, this would be a great post to tweet, you can simply enable send to Twitter, and Google Reader will pop-up a screen with the tweet already prepared [as opposed to going to the site and retweeting].

Do you find these new features helpful?

Google has announced several new features to Google Reader which makes it easy to share posts through a variety of social media, blogging, and bookmarking websites. Specifically, the “Send To” feature will let you simultaneously send all of your shared items to the servicess you select.

To select what services you want to share posts on, visit the settings page in Google Reader and click on the “Send To” link at the top right. Select all of the services you want to share on, such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, or Digg, and your shared information will automatically be sent to those services.

I’m a big fan of sharing (might be all those lessons I learned in kindergarten). And when I share something, it’s always nice to get a response like “Thanks!” or “That was the funniest thing I’ve ever read!” Whether you’re 5 or 50, you’re more likely to share other awesome things if you know people are excited to hear what you have to say.

Google Reader makes it easy to read and share your favorite articles, blogs, and videos. In the last year, we’ve added new features to Reader like the ability to choose friends and share items with a note. But it did occur to us that the sharing process was incomplete — there was no way to have conversations with friends about all those shared items.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that starting today, your friends will be able to reply to shared items with comments, allowing you to have conversations with your friends right inside Reader. Comments can only be seen by friends of the person who originally shared the item.

To get started, click “Comment View” at the top of your Friends’ shared items in Reader, or just write a comment by clicking “Add comment” at the bottom of any shared item. For more details on how comments work, check out the Google Reader blog.

I’m an avid user of Google Reader because of its web interface and the fact that I can read my subscribed feeds at any computer, but I’ve never really shared the blog posts I’ve found interesting using the Shared Items feature.

If you’re the type of person who usually likes sharing good articles and links with everyone, like me, with Google adding the Notes Feature to Shared Items, you can explain why you’re sharing that particular post.

I think that this new feature will encourage more people to share posts that they read with others.

Google also added 3 new styles to add a little personality to your public shared page. Here’s what mine looks like, and I’ll definitely be adding more shared posts in the future.

Those who are bloggers or familiar with blogging are most likely familiar with RSS feeds. But there are still many people who aren’t.

RSS is known as Really Simple Syndication and is a web feed format that is used to publish updated content, such as blog entries, podcasts or news articles. Basically explained, it is a way to read constantly changing content as it is made available.

RSS content is usually read using software called an RSS reader. The orange symbol on the left is used to identify an RSS feed, and when you see that, you know that you can subscribe to their content. You can save the RSS feed to your RSS reader, and every time a website is updated, you will see it in your RSS reader as soon as it is published. Web based RSS readers include Google Reader and Bloglines and they are useful because you can read your subscribed feeds in any browser, no matter what computer you are on.

If you’re a blogger, it is in your best interest to have an RSS feed placed a prominent area where users can easily find it. In most blog software such as Blogger and Wordpress, an RSS feed is already installed. If you want to measure how many readers subscribe to your feed, Feedburner is a recommended tool for traffic analysis, ways to promote your feed and a lot more features. It is free and easy to use.

So whenever you see that orange square, you know that you can subscribe to an RSS feed. If you haven’t already, you can subscribe to Ten Golden Rules’ Blog RSS feed and be up to date on all our blog posts. :)
