I was recently developing a Facebook strategy for one of my new clients and figured it would be a great topic for this week’s post. Anybody can create a business or fan page for Facebook. What you do with the page is an entirely different story.

Where do you begin? You need to start off by asking three questions. What are your goals for the Facebook page? What is your strategy for achieving your goals? What tactics are you going to implement?
I’m going to use a fictional company (Acme Rockets) as my example. Acme Rockets wants to use its Facebook page to drive new people to www.acmerockets.com to purchase their rockets. They also want to use their page as a way to increase brand awareness.
The first things we need to look at are the goals.
  • To triple their fan base in 12 months.
  • To increase total new fans a month by 10% per month over the next 4 months.
  • To increase interactions a month by 20% per month for 4 consecutive months.
  • To increase likes per month by 20% per month for 4 consecutive months.

Now that we have goals set the next thing we need to do is develop a winning strategy.

  • Increasing your interaction with fans. The interactions are going to show on your fan’s feeds. This is free exposure to people who do not know you. The more interactions you have on your page the more real-estate you own on your fan’s pages. I know this sounds simple but figuring out the types of interactions that will help you reach your goals is not so simple.

The goals are set and so is the strategy. The final step is the tactics we’re going to use.

  • Make two to three posts a day.
  • Link to articles relating to rockets.
  • Interact with fans that make posts on your wall.
  • Post pictures of rockets on your wall.
  • Create a Coolest Rocket Photo contest. For example, to enter the contest you have to be a fan. The photo has to be tagged by you. The more comments your friends make the better chance you have at winning the contest.
  • Create a custom FBML page promoting “becoming a fan”.
  • Create a custom FBML page selling your latest rockets. Jay Berkowitz recently coined this type of selling as s-commerce and more and more companies are doing this through Facebook.

Facebook Insights is going to be your gift from God when it comes to figuring out what tactics work and do not work. It’s a great tool to measure user exposure, actions, and behavior relating to your Social Ads and Facebook Page. By understanding activity and performance, fans and ad respondents, and trends and comparisons, you are better equipped to improve your business on Facebook and elsewhere. For example, your fans might like certain types of photos better than others. We want to know which photos the fans liked and commented on the most – Insights will show you this. The same principles can be applied to articles as well.

So remember, you aren’t guaranteed results just because you created a Facebook page. You have to map out an effective plan that includes goals, strategy, and tactics. And remember to use Facebook Insights; the feedback it provides will help you develop better tactics to reach your Facebook page’s goals.

The Most Important Way to Measure Social Media ROI

Google Analytics is free and it is a very reliable way to measure what happens on your website,. This program can tell you which websites people came from, and it can measure what they do on your website. It is very easy to add a conversion code on the sales confirmation page or ‘goal’ such as a completed Contact Us form. Every site that doesn’t have a high end analytics program should have Google Analytics in place.

Ten Golden Rules doesn’t sell products we are a B2B (Business to Business) site, we don’t measure direct sales, we measure leads on our site. In this example below, we looked at traffic to our Ten Golden Rules website from Social Media website Twitter. This site sent 492 visits from my www.Twitter.com/JayBerkowitz account. 2.44 percent of those site visitors signed up for our free eNewsletter, .41 percent requested a website consultation and .20 percent completed a Contact Us form, overall 3.05 percent of site visitors became a lead for our company or they opted-in to our database. We track the sources of our clients and we are able to determine the ROI from our Social Media activities.

Social Media Sponsorships = ROI

Another form of measurable ROI from Social Media can come in the form of sponsorships.

Our Ten Golden Rules Internet Marketing Podcast, a recent SOFIE Award Winner for best Use of New Media, has had two sponsors, SilverPOP and GoToMeeting.

In addition, the Podcast has generated invitations for high profile speaking engagements, media coverage and clients for Ten Golden Rules internet agency.

Here are the posts from my fellow panelists on how to generate ROI from Social Media:

When you hear about something a few times, it really starts to get you thinking. I had a discussion with Jay who revealed he’d been told “blogs are not social media”. Then yesterday, I see a post by Mitch Joel where part of the comments discussion ended up focusing on what makes a blog social media. The comments noted that without allowing comments on your blog, it wouldn’t qualify as social media (somewhat ironic, if you see what I mean). :)

It’s never occured to me that blogs are not social media. Social media sites, at their simplest, can be described as any that allow you to share, or as we are fond of saying, “join the conversation”. When you blog, you become part of the “blogosphere” which is a community no matter how you look at it. Also, you create a profile when you blog, which often includes the same kinds of information you feature on Facebook or Twitter. And if Twitter, which is described as “micro-blogging” is social media, then how are blogs not?

Besides, Wikipedia says blogs are social media. Who’s going to argue with that?

In short, blogs are a great way to get your information out and express yourself to those you have a connection with. So, for me, it’s rather narrow minded to think of blogs as outside the realm of social media.

Your TV is DEAD

Is TV dead? Is everything going to be online now? According to an article from the Christian Science Monitor, “the growing number of new deals and new devices being announced suggests that a profound change in the way people watch video- and what video they watch – is under way.”
People are watching video’s when they want and where they want. People can view their mobile phones, desktop, HDTV’s and iPods.

Netflix – will deliver content online. By purchasing a $100 box from Roku you can view 10,000 movie’s through TV.
Sony – will begin offering movies to download from the Playstation.
Apple –sells movies through iTunes and is re-launching Apple TV Player.
Amazon.com – offering Amazon Video on Demand offering access to 40,000 movies and TV shows, only available on a computer.
TiVo – will be supplying video from YouTube
Hulu – was launched in March and offers streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC and FOX as well as others.
TV manufactures are going to be manufacturing TV sets that will be connected to the Internet allowing web content to be viewed.
