Make Mone Online with Affiliate Marketing and Affiliate Networks

There’s a buzz in the office.  Excitement! There’s just something about Affiliate Summit East that puts a skip in our step and apparently, a rhyme in our writing (albeit, admittedly, not all that great).

Our Meet the Share Results Team blog series is all about, well, meeting the team here.  They’ll all be at Affiliate Summit!  We started with Jamie, and next we met Maranda.

Today, I sat down with Le Michelle Nguyen.  I like Le.  Her Skype message says “fettucini, Le-Michelle-Nguyenlinguini, martini, bikini!” and that’s just the kinda’ fun loving girl that she is.  She’s passionate about what she does at Share Results, and the best part is, she’s really quite good at it.

Good combination, no? You can stop by and chat with Le at our booth at the ASE conference.  The team will be at RG 2017, so come on over and discuss your affiliate marketing business and your goals.

Janice Scrim: Le, I know you’re very excited about attending ASE 2010.  What are you most looking forward to?
Le Michelle Nguyen: Meeting up with friends and making new ones. I love meeting people, period.  I’ve noticed that as the years go by, there are more and more people who go to this event.  You know if you meet someone under the guise of work, they may one day change companies and roles over the time. What I love about conferences like Affiliate Summit, of course it’s a place to do business, but it’s always nice knowing it’s the people you know will be there.

JS: You’ve been with Share Results for 5 years.  What do you think separates SR from some of the other networks and software providers out there?
LMN: We’re not the biggest network out there and we don’t want to be. We’re boutique and we know our affiliates and merchants by name.  You’re not just a number and you can call us anytime. And when it comes to our software, it’s a proof of concept— the software that you can licence from us is same platform that powers our very own network.  We’re cut from the same cloth! We constantly gather feedback from our partners to make it better software, simple to use and built for your needs.

JS: What kind of affiliates would most greatly benefit from a partnership with Share Results? What about merchants?
LMN: If you have a strong female or family audience with reach in the education, apparel and travel segments, you’ll find much success in our network.  Our network aims to partner with merchants whose ideal customer is a life time-customer. We employ this way of long tail thinking because we want our affiliates to be able to promote a product or service that has legs. (Really nice legs at that!)

JS: When it comes to supporting affiliates in building their online business, what do you do best?
LMN: I’m good at matching up affiliates with ideal merchants they should be promoting based on the types of placements they use.

JS: What are some of the challenges that affiliates face in today’s affiliate marketing space?
LMN: Being overwhelmed with “stuff.”  Whether it’s web metrics, plug-ins, software or taxes laws. There is an abundance of information out there for an affiliate to know.  The challenge is, how do you stay on top of it all? That’s why I think it’s important for affiliates to set personal and business goals for themselves. It can be measured by the amount of traffic to their site per month, how much they earn in Q4 or moving from a part-time to full-time affiliate marketing.  These benchmarks help you set the tone on what tools, programs and commissions you need to reach the next level. J

JS: What kind of support do you offer merchants to ensure they are expanding their a) brand recognition and b) sales potential?
LMN: I make sure I’m always available for questions.  Especially when a merchant is just launching or looking to boost their program exposure, I expect a lot of questions.  It’s a two-way street: I don’t want to make a cake unless I know what flavor you like.  We can better support our merchants’ goals and objectives for their affiliate program if we know how what kind of ingredients they plan bring to the table. For instance, I would always encourage a merchant to invest in doing some offline marketing in conjunction with their online efforts.

JS: The most recent 2010 AffStat Report indicates that most affiliates in the affiliate marketing space are just starting out.   How do you help ensure the success of newbie affiliates?
LMN: It’s no secret; figure out what you like and run with that. There are number of ways affiliates can make money, but if this is something you’re going to invest your time and energy into, you want to be sure it’s something you love writing about, or talking about. You should talk about it and promote as if it was natural. If you don’t like gardening, it’s going to difficult to build a store around gardening supplies. But if you love baby clothes, then…

JS: You’re a fun-lovin’, think-outside-the-box kinda’ gal—what do you love doing outside of work?dogs-handbag
LMN: In addition to being a digital marketer, I’m a freelance photographer, a blogger and I play soccer and do ballet. I also own two of the cutest little dachshunds dogs you will ever meet, Belle & Michigan. Plus I can cook a mean roast chicken.

Wanna meet Le in person? She’s this charming, and then some.  Meet up with her at booth RG 2017 or email her at le [at] shareresults [dot] com.

Thursday, we are wrapping up our Meet the Team series, and will be introducing you to Melissa Del Gaudio, who will be at the booth to tell you all about our software solution.  Be sure to tune in again then, and SEE YOU IN NYC!

Will Traffic Voodoo Really Bring Lots Of Visitors To Your Website Or Just Lots Of Money To Jeff Johnson’s Wallet?
Traffic Voodoo is a new release from Jeff Johnson, the Traffic Guru, which went live on March 29th.

The Traffic Voodoo course has been designed for the serious online marketers who want to build a good online business. Although not essential it would certainly help if you have some knowledge as well as a few required technical skills such as:

1. Domain registration
2. Setting up a Wordpress site
3. Installing Wordpress plugings
4. Using Wordpress

Traffic Voodoo runs over an 8 week period, below you can see how Jeff has planned to take his students through each of the modules in the course:
Week 1 & 2: The Traffic Getting Quick Start
Getting traffic is what Jeff does best and in this module he shares the very same techniques that he uses every day. He shows you the best kind of websites to build, how and where to use opt in pages and squeeze pages and most importantly of all how to get lots of targeted traffic.

The majority of this module is pretty basic as you would expect for the first module, but this stuff is seriously important. It is what 99% of all online marketers do so it is important stuff. There are also a few additional bits that are unique to Jeff and I certainly found them very interesting.

Week 3: Converting Traffic
Once you have traffic pouring on to your site you need to be sure that your site can convert the traffic in to sales. In this module Jeff not only shows you how to convert your visitors but also how to set up tracking which gives you an insight in to visitor behaviour.

The good thing about this module is that Jeff shows you real examples, using his actual sites, so you get a good insight in to his business. The part that I found most interesting was Jeff’s methods for testing various opt in templates. I will be trying this out with some of my own sites.

Week 4: Social Media
By now you will all have heard about the power of social media. It is definitely one of the most popular methods of driving free traffic, but if you don’t know how to maximise it’s potential you can waste a lot of time for very little return.

Jeff mainly focuses on YouTube and Facebook, which is understandable, but I was hoping for an in depth look at Twitter as I know for a fact that there is good money to be made on Twitter.

Week 5: Instant Traffic Money Machine
This method actually looks at alternative methods for driving traffic, such as: PPC, PPV and CPA. This traffic is not free but Jeff does show his students how to get cheap traffic that is highly targeted.

This module is probably not something that beginners should look to action until they are making money using Jeff’s free traffic methods. Even if he can get traffic for as little as 2 cents a click, I strongly advise that you only consider this when you are making money.

Week 6: Instant Affiliate Traffic

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways to make money in internet marketing. Here Jeff shows you exactly why that is and how you can use affiliates to generate even more traffic. He will also show you how he makes money by helping other marketers sell their products.

Given that Jeff has made the majority of his money in affiliate marketing it is no surprise that this section is probably the best in the entire course.

Week 7: List Building
The power of the list! Ever heard people say this before? Well owning a list can be an extremely profitable source of income. In this section Jeff shares his methods for capturing email addresses and how best to talk to your list.

Having a relationship with your list is extremely important and Jeff probably proves that more than most. I don’t believe that Jeff has a list that is anywhere near the size of someone like Frank Kern, but he often beats him on JV leader boards and that is down to the relationship he has with his subscribers.

Week 8: Coaching Calls
Jeff will revist all the methods that he has taught in group coaching calls. These sessions are always interactive and students will have the chance to ask Jeff any questions they may have about online marketing, whether covered in this course or not.

The holidays present online retailers with tremendous earning potential.  With mere days left in the month of October, and the countdown to the real holiday madness just around the corner, now is the time to have a good look at your marketing campaigns to make sure you’re set up to enhance your sales volume, and ultimately, seal the deal.  Here are some key areas of your marketing campaigns that you should look at to make sure you’re in shape for the season.

1. Quality Affiliates
Having knowledgeable, capable marketing partners is crucial to the success of your online campaigns.  A quality affiliate will have an attractive, user-friendly website with a high page rank, and will employ multiple marketing methods to promote your product(s).  So make it a point of recruiting these affiliates and regularly logging into your account to evaluate the quality of partners that you are attracting to your program.

If you don’t feel confident about the caliber of your partners, you should speak to your affiliate manager, or consider re-evaluating your recruitment strategy.  Your Traffic Report can also help you identify your top-performing affiliates, along with their conversion rates, and can be pulled based on Affiliate ID.  Once you have partners whom you believe have the potential to perform well in your program, the more likely quality sales will be generated.

2. Click-Through Rate
Your click-through rate is an important indicator to help you determine whether (a) customers are attracted to your product/service, and (b) if they are abandoning your landing page for some unforeseen issue.  For example, you may create an effective banner ad or coupon, but a problem on an affiliate’s site, your landing page or your shopping cart could be impacting the customer’s ultimate decision to buy.

The Deep Linking tool is applied by merchants who want to help their affiliates highlight specific products that match the need of the customer.  This tool allows affiliates to send customers to an exact area of your site that truly responds to their buying need.  When a customer sees a product on a banner that they like, and then lands on a relevant landing page for that item, you are helping to seal the deal, and reduce the odds of shopping cart abandonment.  If you’re seeing low stats, consider permitting a tool like deep linking in your program, or talk to your Share Results affiliate manager to offer some insight.

3. Seal the Deal
Once an affiliate has sent a customer to your website, and the customer is ready to buy, it’s up to you to seal the deal.   Make sure you have the right tools, and are doing everything you can to make buying convenient and simple.
An example of a deal breaker might be a banner on an affiliate’s site promising a flat price for one of your products, only to have that customer discover shipping charges during the checkout process.  In fact, according to comScore, 43% of shoppers abandon their shopping carts because of unexpectedly high shipping charges, and 72% of consumers say that if an e-commerce site eliminated free shipping, they would use another e-commerce site that did offer free shipping.  Free shipping is just one of several incentives that are important to online shoppers, so make sure to incorporate this in your strategy whenever possible.

Most importantly, remember to apply your Share Results marketing software to its full potential by using the tools at your disposal, and to check in with your affiliate manager regularly to find more strategic techniques for closing the sale.

Is your affiliate marketing campaign ready for the holiday season? If not, this is the blogging event to get you ready for the busiest season of the year. Check out last week’s blogs, and make sure to tune in until November 27 for more tips and techniques to help you end Q4 with your most successful campaign yet!

Merchants: Boost Your Sales and Seal the Deal with 3 Quick Tips

Post to Twitter Tweet This Post

With our recent affiliate dashboard makeover, we couldn’t let our merchants go without a new dashboard makeover as well. )

Here now, are a few of our merchant interface changes in a little more detail.

New Welcome Dashboard:
The redesigned merchant interface allows our clients to get more information, with less effort. Merchants can immediately see their KPIs, allowing them to quickly change their marketing campaigns in response. This new interface reduces the number of clicks, and more importantly the time spent searching. So with new graphical reporting, merchants can analyze their program performance from the moment they log into the Share Results system.

Top Performing Affiliates: Displays in descending order the top 10 affiliates earning commissions in the merchant’s program for the current month. Includes quick links to affiliate details such as IDs, username and website URL. Other info in this section includes impressions, clicks, click-through-ratio, registrations, approved transactions, total commissions earned for the current month.

Top Banners: Displays the best performing creative by EPC for the merchant’s affiliate program. Includes thumb nail version of creative where applicable. This includes creative by type such as banner, flash, text link, coupon and widgets.

Period Comparison: Displays a graphical trend of the overall program stats over a specific period. Compares stats by number of transactions, impressions, clicks, number of affiliates generating clicks, amount of revenue share commission generated, amount of CPA commission generated, total program commissions and program EPC (earnings per click).

Reports: Allows merchants to quickly access top-level reports directly from the welcome dashboard. Reports include Quick Summary, Traffic, Earnings, Transactions and showing results month-to-date.

If you are a merchant of Share Results we encourage you to take some time to log into your account and provide us your feedback about the new appearance. Email us at: merchants@shareresults.com

Touched by PixelIn continuation of our last post about the Affiliate Summit East conference in New York, Share Results had the opportunity to attend the GLAM Interactive party. While the GLAM parties have been known to be all-female events, this time it was an all-gender affair. In fact, correct us if we’re wrong, but were there actually more men at the GLAM party than women? The GLAM party included a live performance from the band…  wait for it…
Touch my Pixel.

Share Results walked the floor for much of the conference. Monday of course was the first and most popular day for the exhibit hall where most of the networking takes place. The beauty of having the conference at the Hilton in Midtown New York was that there were two floors where companies were exhibiting. Sometimes exhibit halls can get much too chaotic and crowded, so breaking it up into two floors was a good idea. Perhaps it might be a great opportunity for the organizers of the event to segment future exhibit halls by specific sections for merchants, agencies, networks, what have you. We could definitely see how much easier it would be to help affiliates and other existing/potential partners to decide on just where to allocate their time.

Affiliate Summit EastFor affiliates, it seems the best way to manoeuver an event like this is to walk one floor for the first half of the day and another for the second half. It was nice to see more affiliates handing out business cards to potential networks and merchants they were interested in, something we noticed was not happening as frequently at the last Affiliate Summit East event in Boston. Some attendees we spoke with  seemed to be navigating more toward the online education industry, as this is already a highly popular vertical in affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Summit East NYC 2009Other trends we noticed was that more businesses seemed to be working with more CPC and CPM models. Also, a couple of booths we encountered were from companies engaged in the mobile marketing area. The people we spoke with in this area said that they had geo-targeting capabilities and found ways to tailor messages via SMS to users outside North America, which is promising for merchants focusing on international markets. Other topics of discussion were affiliate software. And after asking about what users of affiliate software in the industry wanted most from white labeling, it seemed the biggest request was sub-id tracking, personalized customer/tech support, and customization, features that are all available through Share Results.

Overall, the Affiliate Summit East conference was a successful and well-attended event. One final word about the conference though. If you happen to be an affiliate (whether you’re a beginner or advanced affiliate), you may want to arrange a meeting with Melanie Seery at the next summit in Vegas this January, because she’s kind of a Big Deal! D

She’s a very important voice in the affiliate marketing industry today and if you are just getting your feet wet as an affiliate or need more information about how the US tax legislation impacts your state, we encourage you to head over to her site Affiliate Voice. You can also follow Melanie on Twitter @Mellies.

While you may not have had the opportunity to meet with Share Results in beautiful New York City this time around, you can look out for us at similar forthcoming industry events. However, the quickest way to connect or partner with us is via email, our sign-up page, our BAMroll and of course, Twitter @ShareResults. )

Something you need to consider when choosing an affiliate network to launch your program in is the community behind that network. Some affiliate networks are more self-serve oriented; others are more relationship-focused. This impacts both the level of support you get as an advertiser as well as the kind of affiliates you can access.

Relationship-focused affiliate networks will often focus on affiliate recruitment, campaign promotion, and technical support for advertisers as well as account management for affiliates. Niche content publishers value these relationship-based networks. Consequently, the affiliates on these networks tend to be more interested in long-tail and niche promotions, as well as developing long-term relationships with the merchants they work with.

On more self-serve style networks, you’re more likely to come across affiliates whose content is broader and more general. These broader-appeal affiliates tend to be driven by commission structures rather than merchant relationships. These are often better suited for brands with a very vast array of product offers or regular seasonal promotions.

For instance, a department-store-style merchant might benefit more from a self-serve network. However, a merchant that is advertising focused product offers such as only women’s wear, only sports equipment, or only electronics might benefit from working with a network that focuses on helping affiliates monetizing their niche content.

Like any acquisition channel, affiliate marketing is one where you have to consider your own business model before choosing a partner. Just as there are both niche and multi-national PR firms, for example, there are affiliate networks that cater to different kinds of brands and, as a result, different kinds of affiliates. Choosing a network for your program that can attract the affiliates you need to promote your specific product offer will make all the difference on whether your program generates steady or increasing returns.

Choosing a Network for Your Affiliate Program

Post to Twitter Tweet This Post

There are two general ways you can approach setting up an affiliate program. You can either (1) join an existing affiliate network, or (2) white label some affiliate marketing software and launch your own, standalone affiliate program.

Each of these approaches have their advantages. Choosing the one that’s right for you, however, will depend largely on your business model, product offer, and business philosophy. Before advertising your products on an existing network, then, you should consider your brand and range of product offers against that network, it’s reputation, and the verticals that its strongest in.

The first thing you should consider when looking into partnering with an affiliate network is its size and scope. While some affiliate networks are very broad and feature every kind of product and company, others are narrower in scope and specialize in specific product verticals.

If you set up your affiliate program through a broader network, you will probably get access to many more affiliates and your campaign can get much wider reach. However, it will be more difficult to find the right affiliates with the targeted traffic to promote your product.

On the other hand, setting up your affiliate program through a network that specializes in a specific vertical will make it much easier to find affiliates experienced in that niche. If you have a diverse range of products to promote, however, a specialized network might limit you from offering other products through that same affiliate program down the road.

Finally, if you have a wide range of niche product offers, you might want to consider setting up your own, standalone affiliate program. Doing so will require a white label affiliate software solution. Before committing to any one platform, however, you should make sure that you choose the right affiliate software for both your own needs, and those of your affiliates.

Affiliate marketing can be a powerful and cost-effective acquisition channel. However, it’s important that your affiliate program suits your needs, complements your other acquisition efforts, and meets the needs of your affiliates. Before setting your program up, then, you want to make sure that you consider product offer vis-a-vis the affiliate marketing space, and choose the path that’s most appropriate for you business.

So we’ve decided to celebrate the affiliate marketing community, and thought that the best way to do that was to celebrate affiliate marketers who are active in the community. And in the age of social media, one the best ways to contribute to an online community is by blogging. After all, blog content is interactive and shareable.

And with that, Share Results has decided to give the affiliate marketing community the — or what we like to call the Big Affiliate Marketing Blogroll – or BAMroll. This is going to be a list of affiliate marketing bloggers that’s updated every week. We’ll also be offering a badges to anyone who makes the list, and an OPML file to anyone who wants to subscribe to every blog on the list. Both the list and the OPML file will be updated every week.

Without further ado, here is the inaugural list of 16 affiliate marketing bloggers. If you want to know more these blogs, or about how the list is compiled, check out the BAMroll page.

No matter how attractive your commissions are, the software that powers your affiliate program can make it or break it. Not only should affiliate marketing software accurately track all conversions, but it should also have an array of functions and features that allow you to efficiently manage your various kinds of affiliates and product promotions.

1. Comprehensive Affiliate Reporting
To best analyze your campaign performance, you’re going to need information on affiliate traffic, conversion rates, revenue, and commissions. You will also want to be able to run specialized reports that let you easily monitor account balances and transaction details.

2. Advanced Marketing Tool Support
Offer your affiliates pre-made marketing materials such as banners, text links, datafeeds, and HTML mailers lets them focus more on promoting your product and less on administrative tasks. Also, being able to also group those marketing materials according to promotion can help increase conversions which will mean more sales for you, and more commissions for affiliates.

3. Flexible Commission Structuring
A big part of affiliate marketing is relationships. Your software, the, should be able to handle a variety of commission structures so that incentives can be tailored according to product, promotion, or how your affiliates promote. Being able to offer hybrid commission structures, product-specific commissions, and special commission groups can significantly increase the ROI of your program.

4. Solid Tracking and Transaction Processing
If you’re going to enjoy real-time tracking, you’ll need a combination of cookie and pixel tracking. This will both prevent fraud and support your tracking reports. Your affiliate managers should also be able to review and approve/decline transactions through the software.

5. Customizable & Brandable
If you white label an affiliate platform, then that software needs to reflect both your brand and your business model. On the customization side, you should be able to control what functions, features, and fields are available to which affiliates. On the branding side, you should be able to skin it to reflect, well, your brand.

Sales Driving Software
Like any online initiative, an affiliate marketing campaign is only as effective as the technology behind it. The software you choose to run your affiliate marketing program not only has to track conversions and provide analytics, it also has to be usable for both you and your affiliates. After all, if you’re spending too much time trying to make sense of whether or not an affiliate program is worth it, it’s probably not.

5 Essentials of Affiliate Marketing Software

Post to Twitter Tweet This Post

Today affiliates and advertisers will be able to see first hand some of the changes made to Share Results. As Maranda had mentioned yesterday, we are excited to present changes to our website and software to highlight our relationship focused approach to affilaite marketing.

When we relaunched the Share Results website we wanted to emphasize three distinct services; an affiliate network for ecommerce merchants, an affiliate marketing software solution with affiliate management for this solution, and opportunities for affiliates to promote trusted and established products. Our focus is to give our merchants and affiliates a complete range of affiliate marketing solutions to suit their strategic needs for this online chanel.

As for the software release in 4.3, affiliates will notice increased transparency in the way they view their sales/leads (transactions) and commissions whenever they view their transaction report. This report can now be run based on 3 criteria associated with the number of transactions that are approved, pending and associated commissions across various time periods.

Merchants also benefit in this release by getting additonal options with their commission structure parameters for affiliates.  This new addition allows advertisers to offer a greater range of commission incentives for their affilaites, which are in turn supported by our diverse and indepth reporting features.

For more information on the release please go to: https://www.shareresults.com/pressrelease_detail.php?prid=143 or if you would like more information please drop us a line, we would love to share our approach with you;)
