With the rise of social media, blogging, forums, reviews, and bookmarking in the internet marketing realm, sentiment analysis is gaining importance. The issue, however, is that while still in its infancy, sentiment analysis is still challenged by the task of translating human emotion into hard data.

Nevertheless, the importance of monitoring online social outlets is essential to the success of a business and can allow businesses to act fast when issues arise. By analyzing the sentiment of online discussions about your business, you can know if a decision you recently made was good or if customers are unhappy.

Monitoring and analyzing sentiment is only half the battle. It is important to join the conversation and offer solutions to problems, explanations of misinformation, etc. With your brand having a strong online presence in social media, you can quickly reach many customers and keep them happy.

Google is making it easier to find images to fit your specifications. Like they have been doing with many of there products, they have added search options to Google Images. We are now able to search for photos by color (grayscale, containing certain colors, etc), type (clip art, photo, face), and size (768×20).

For those of you that regularly make purchases from stock photography websites, you probably are used to using search options like this. This is a great way to search a number of different stock photography websites in one shot rather than going to each website and searching individually.

To access the Google Image search options, simply click the “Show Options” link on the Google Image search results page.

With more and more people watching videos, think about including video’s into your press release. According to a new study that was published by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, “the share of online adults who watch videos on video-sharing sites has nearly doubled since 2006. Fully 62% of adult internet users have watched video on these sites, up from just 33% who reported this in December 2006.” Many press release service allow you to embed the video into the release. You can upload the video file itself or embed a link from a YouTube channel. With today’s press releases, you should be offering your reader the news they want, how they want to read or watch it.

Recently, a Chicago based realty group sued a Twitter user for $50,000 for a single tweet, a tweet about her opinion about their apartments. Now to me, I think this kind of action is pretty serious yet the Twitter user, @abonnen (who’s account is no longer up) only had 20 followers. The message probably didn’t go too far. With this whole lawsuit emerging, the company now has an even more damaging reputation – being a company who are a “sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization. (as quoted by Jeffrey Michael from Horizon Realty Group in the Chicago Sun Times)

The tweet read as follows –

This whole situation had gotten me thinking about the countless tweets I’ve made complaining about companies. I’ve seen other people do it, and gotten responses from the company personally asking if there was something they could help them with to make their experience with the company better. Horizon could have simply told the Twitter user to remove the tweet before going off and suing her, but they didn’t.

I’m all about good reputation management, but I think this situation has gone a bit too far. When it comes to apartments there is always going to be someone saying something bad, so I think the only thing that could be done is to handle the situation on a one on one basis.

When building links for search engine optimization purposes, the best thing you can do is to make your links look natural. Especially if you are buying links, you want to make these links look like people just decided to link to your website because it has good content. Since search engines increase your rankings for having natural links while they can penalize you if you are buying/selling links, it is important to cover your tracks.

One of the most common mistakes when building links unnaturally is to use exactly the same anchor text, for example a keyword phrase you are targeting, for a large number of links. If your links are natural, there is a very slim chance that everyone that links to you will use identical anchor text, and the search engines know this. If you use variations in your anchor text, your links will look more natural. For example, if you are targeting the phrase “internet marketing consultant”, when choosing anchor text for new links, sometimes use “internet marketing consulting” or “consulting for internet marketing” and other variations.

Another issue is your link growth. If your site has never generated more than five links in a month, then all of a sudden it generates 200 links in a month, this can look very unnatural to the search engines. If you are starting a linkbuilding campaign, start slow. Each month, try to get a few more backlinks than the previous month.

The key to a successful linkbuilding campaign is making the links appear to be natural. If you can accomplish this, you will see much better ranking results.

For those of you who are new to Google AdWords, there is a free workbook that will help you get started using the AdWords interface and creating pay per click advertising campaigns. The free downloadable pdf file is a bit lengthy, but provides some great insight into the basic steps of using AdWords.

The main topics covered in the workbook are organizing campaigns, picking the right keywords, writing targeted ads, and putting it all together. Each topic is complete with definitions, tips, and screen shots.

The workbook is by no means your answer to getting the most out of your advertising, but it is a good way to get started if you have a small budget and are doing things on your own. For a more in depth strategic guide to online marketing, try the Ten Golden Rules of Online Marketing Book.

More and more customers are going online before making a purchase and lot just looking for price, but also looking for consumer reviews of products and services. Sometimes, these comments can be skewed in favor of the brand someone is researching. Bloggers could be paid or compensated for each positive post about the brand you may be looking for.

According to the Associated Press, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reviewing practices to monitor this bloggers and the gifts they receive. They have developed new guidelines to go after bloggers for any false claims for failure to disclose any conflicts of interest.

“If you walk into a department store, you know the (sales) clerk is a clerk,” said Rich Cleland, assistant director in the FTC’s division of advertising practices. “Online, if you think that somebody is providing you with independent advice and … they have an economic motive for what they’re saying, that’s information a consumer should know.”

These mandatory disclosures could change how reviews are perceived because users may never know that bloggers are being compensated for their posts.

A common misconception that can be a crutch to people running a search engine optimization campaign is that getting as many links as possible is the ultimate way to reach those high search results. Yes, having loads of backlinks will generally help improve organic rank, but the quality of those links is what will make the real difference. Several basic factors should be considered about a site when requesting a link from it:

  • Relevance to your site
  • Neighborhood it builds
  • Backlinks to that site

Relevance – What keywords are you targeting? Are those keywords on the page you are requesting a backlink from? These are the questions you should be asking in order to build a quality link. The more relevant the page is to your site, the more a link from it will be worth to you.

Neighborhood – What other sites is the page linking to? Ideally, other links on the page from which you are requesting a link would be to sites exactly like yours. This will help put you in the right neighborhood as far as Google is concerned. If a page links to sites that resemble your site, Google will consider these sites to be related to yours and that is a good thing. If a page links to your site and a bunch of porn and gambling sites, Google will consider your site to be related to porn and gambling, which can have a dire effect on your results.

Backlinks to the page – How powerful is a page that you are looking for a link from? A page that has no backlinks is not near as powerful as a page that has hundreds of backlinks. If a page that has hundreds of backlinks links to your site, the power of those hundreds of links is also shared with you.

These are just a few basic things that should be observed when building links. More will be shared in later posts. Keep reading!

Twitter is taking impersonation seriously and will be launching Verified Accounts. As it stands now, it violates their terms of service for someone to claim to be someone they are not and gives the company the power to revoke the account. First, Twitter will be testing public officials, agencies, athletes and well known individuals. They hope to extend this as time goes on. When an account is verified, there will be a logo that people can clearly see the person or company is who they say they are.

Lately, it seems we can not turn on any news programming without hearing a mention of Twitter. As one would expect, most people would now be tweeting up a storm. This, however, is not the case for young adults aged 18-24. While a whopping 99% of this age group have social network profiles, only about 22% of them use Twitter.

Of the 18-24 year olds who do use Twitter, only 29% follow companies. The necessity to get this important demographic more involved in Twitter is obvious, as it is a huge opportunity. One way to get these young adults more involved would be to incorporate more applications into Twitter. A survey recently showed that 89% of social network users have installed apps on their profiles. Time to roll out the apps, Twitter.
