I thoroughly enjoyed reading Maranda’s Affiliate Summit Aftermath and though we were booth buddies my experience was slightly different. New York for me is well known for its food and wide variety choices but when it comes to conferences I do tend to forget to eat and eat properly. I was lucky enough to sample the fine food street cart experience within a two block radius of the conference. I had several New York styled hot dogs along with chicken and rice with spicy sauce (I did regret the spicy sauce choice on both the hot dogs and chciken). With my New york dinning experience covered it gave me enough time to check out the show floor and the sessions.

I managed to go to a few sessions at the Affiliate Summit and thoroughly enjoyed the session for using social media for SEO. The tips which I found useful for this session were:

  • Customising your bit.ly for your tweets
  • retweet good links and hope that others follow
  • Use # tags to get aggregated
  • For one way followed links set up a You Tube channel, participate in Yahoo Answers and create a Google profile

I am not sure if this session is online but if happen to get a hold of it please check it out as my summary does not do it justice :P

Back to my booth buddy (Maranda was impressed with constant chatter!) and me we did meet a number of great people at the booth and we thank all those people that stopped by and chatted with us.  We are in process of contacting you :)

Look forward to seeing you all shortly, oh yeah how could I forget to mention walking 20 blocks with Melissa and being hugged by the Joker with Melissa saying “Do you know him”  – Classic moment.

Affiliate Marketing is one of those funny industries in which it can go from the quietest period to the busiest in a short amount of time. If you’ve been an affiliate for some time, you know the difference a month can make. Despite the fact that many affiliates and affiliate managers alike see things quieting down in the dog days of summer, it’s important to be prepared for the coming rush of the back-to-school season and Q4.

While you may be tempted to lie around the pool and soak up that last bit of summer sunshine, it’s important to implement a few changes and be mindful of the up and coming rush. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Keep up to date on new promotions: If you have any links to customer promotions, do you know when they are going to expire? Do you know whether merchants will be extending their existing campaigns, or offering any new ones? If you don’t, feel free to get in touch with your affiliate manager. We like emails. As long as they’re not creepy. Or like this one.
  2. Know what commodities are going to be hot: It goes without saying that some products and commodities are going to sell better in certain periods throughout the year. Anything back-to-school related – school supplies (anything from notebooks to laptops), education-related materials (text-books and education aids), new clothes (such as denim and sweaters), etc… is sure to be a top seller from the end of August right up until October. Christmas- themed materials tend to do better later on in the year. Why not promote creative tools that emphasize these commodities – or ask your affiliate manager for commodity-based creative.
  3. Consider better placement for products you know will do better in this season: If you anticipate that certain products and programs are going to be doing better than others, why not take advantage of the increased interest in these products by giving them better placement on your site or email campaigns? Remember, readers don’t like having to dig for information, so the more accessible you make these creative (ideally placed above the fold), the more likely that they will visit those pages more often.
  4. Consider new banner creative: We’re like anyone else. We like brand, shiny and new. So if you’ve had the same old banners lying around for a few months, maybe it’s time to switch things up a bit and trade them in for something different.
  5. Build on traffic: If you know that the pace is going to pick up in a few weeks, it’s best to start building up your traffic NOW. This is the time to revisit your PPC campaigns, take consideration of keyword tags, add new content and maybe build up your site within your blogging community by becoming more involved in forums and leaving comments (ALWAYS linking back to your site, of course).
  6. Vanity Coupons: If you’re thinking of requesting a vanity coupon, why not ask for something with a seasonal theme? It certainly doesn’t take any extra time for merchants to create and it can help to direct more targeted traffic to your site.

So we want to know, how will you be prepping your campaigns for back to school? Be sure to tune in again soon. We’ll be back to tell you about some of our back-to-school offers and affiliate promotions!

This is another virtually pointless post, yes. I’ve promised posts and more frequent posting and just haven’t lived up to it.

I’m just making this post to say: I still have plans on blogging more in the future. I’ve learned A LOT of information that I can definitely share. Right now I’m just too busy to really think about anything else but my main projects. A project 5 months into the making is going to launch in the near future (for real this time) so it’s like cramming for finals week in my head right now.

Once things cool down I’ll be able to relax and get to blogging more. Priorities folks…gotta win the bread.

This post will be totally useless without some usable piece of affiliate marketing information so here it goes: something I’ve been experimenting with in a few small affiliate side projects is collecting email address information and THEN shooting them to the affiliate offer (”You’re getting a free [blah blah], just enter your name and e-mail address to continue!”). It seems there are quite a few people out there doing this. E-mail them with some “Welcome” packet of affiliate offers, sub them to your list and just mail out more affiliate offers. Plus make commissions off whatever offer you send them to after you capture the name/email. There’s almost always higher payouts for email only offers too. Something to think about and test.

Sorry for being lame.

We know there’s lots of advantages to being an affiliate, but sometimes we find ourselves gravitating towards one program or genre over another. Here are just a handful of reasons why we think it’s pretty awesome to be a fashion retail affiliate:

  1. There’s no shortage of apparel merchants programs to sign up for.
  2. You’re a promoter for a product that always seems to be in demand no matter what season (becoming an affiliate for Petey’s Pumpkin Patch, however, may not be the most profitable opportunity on a year-round basis).
  3. You’re the first one to find out about sales and online promotions.
  4. You often get access to better deals than what is available online or to the general public. Additional discounts off of already reduced items? No problem. Free Shipping? Why not? Why? Because you’re an affiliate and we like to give you coupon codes.
  5. As a result, you feel as if you belong to some kind of Cool Kids “elite shoppers club” that is in the know about the inside deals!
  6. You live the dream –getting paid to shop (well… getting paid for other people to shop, but still!)
  7. Merchandise changes with the seasons, so you and your readers will have an excuse to keep coming back for more –which means return traffic!

If you want to get in on the fashion retail fun, Share Results has a ton of great programs you can promote. Here are just a few examples:

  • The Addition Elle Affiliate Program –Take your pick of promoting plus size retailer Addition Elle or any of the sister brands, Penningtons and MXM and earn 6% commission to boot!
  • The Fashion To Figure Affiliate Program bring out your plus sized fashionista while promoting this trendy plus size fashion merchant, all while you earn 10% commission from all referred sales.
  • Stylefly –This Canadian online boutique offers affiliates 10% commission to promote their boutique of top contemporary designers.
  • Undergroundhiphop – if you’re a fly guy, why not earn 10% commission on all referred sales from this hip-hop merchandise retailer.

Lady Gaga 10 Million Facebook Fans

Love her or hate her, there is no doubt that Lady Gaga is one of the most successfully marketed celebrities of the last decade. And it just keeps getting better. She now has 10 million fans on her Facebook page, making her the living celebrity with the most fans (Michael Jackson still beats her by a cool—or is it a bad?—4.9 million fans). She was also the first artist to earn more than one billion views on YouTube. That’s right: One Billion.

So, how did she do it? Is Lady Gaga truly the most amazing thing since Al Gore invented the Internet? Is there that big of a market for singers who dress up in Kermit the Frog dresses? Or, is it that Lady Gaga has one of the most competent marketing machines behind her since Madonna carefully navigated a boat down a Venice canal using nothing but sheer will and some strategically placed bangles in the Like a Virgin video?

There is a lot more than one aspect behind the meteoric rise to fame of this American songstress, and affiliate marketers could take a lesson from her and her team of PR people. So, here are our five affiliate marketing lessons from Lady Gaga.

She’s unique
There is no doubt that Lady Gaga is one of a kind. While many might say she’s derivative, she seems to have carved out a niche for herself. I, for one, have never seen anyone else in a dress made of floppy Kermit the Frog dolls.

Affiliates need to find a way to offer something unique to people, something that they’re not going to get anywhere else. Give people a little something out of the ordinary and they won’t be able to look away.

She promotes constantly!
Images of Lady Gaga on the Internet, TV, magazines and newspapers have become as ubiquitous as shorts in summer. She is absolutely everywhere. Not every affiliate has the kind of team (or product) that can make that kind of invasion into popular culture, but the point is that it is necessary to get out there and promote whenever and wherever you can.

Bloggers do well by guest blogging on other sites, or by sharing links in strategic places. PPC ads are a great way for affiliates to get themselves out there, and well strategized and relevant comments on blogs can also help. And don’t ever forget our old friend, the email. Getting people to sign up for a newsletter that can be sent to them regularly so that you can keep reminding them of what you have to offer is a great way to keep yourself in the proverbial limelight.

Her songs are easy to remember
Another important aspect of Lady Gaga’s success is the people who write her songs. I’m quite sure that if I just said, “P-p-p-poker face,” there are at least a few people who would have that song stuck in their heads for a while.

So, how does an affiliate get someone to remember them? I’m not suggesting you write a song, but finding a way for people to remember who you are and what you do is a big part of marketing. Consider the following: Just do it; let your fingers do the walking; it takes a licking and keeps on ticking; the quicker picker-upper. I’ll bet you can associate each of those slogans with the company they represent.

A catchy name for your blog, a great tag-line, a quirky product line—all of these things will get your site’s song stuck in the heads of your visitors. Now it’s up to you to write the music.

Famous friends
Lady Gaga has done a good job of being seen in public with other famous people, and has even collaborated with many. How’d you like Beyonce to endorse your site? You might not be so keen, but that would surely bring you at least a few visitors. It also helps that she became BFFs with the Queen of All Media, gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who btw calls her his ‘wifey’.

Starting relationships with some of the bigger players in the affiliate marketing business is a great way to get your site known. Once again, guest blogging is a big one, and if you can get a mention on a popular site, that’s a big deal. You don’t have to get ambushed by paparazzi to be well known, but it certainly does help to have a few well-connected friends.

Be yourself
You won’t find another Lady Gaga, and nobody should be able to find another affiliate site that’s exactly like yours. Feel free to draw upon the influences of your favorite affiliate marketers, but remember that unless you are true to yourself, you may not enjoy what you’re doing enough to actually want to keep doing it. Be yourself and let your personality shine through. Besides, that is exactly the kind of honesty that people trust, and people’s trust is the first step towards conversions for affiliates.

Were you one of those eager beavers lined up outside an Apple store today waiting to buy an iPad? Electrifying the entire world, Apple is still in the throes of their worldwide launch of their iPad: a new touch-screen tablet that allows up to 10 hours of listening to music, viewing video content or web surfing, and weighing 1.5 to 1.6 pounds depending on the model of choice.

While I can’t say I’m as overzealous as some others are about the iPad, this all comes on the heels of the product already selling over 1 million units in the US. The product only launched eight weeks ago, but now everyone else who hasn’t picked one up yet has the chance to become part of an elite group.

The worldwide launch of the iPad also comes on the heels of news that (according to The Economist) “APPLE has overtaken Microsoft to become the world’s largest technology company by market capitalisation. On Wednesday May 26th Apple’s market value of $222 billion had closed the $80 billion gap which stood between the two companies at the beginning of the year. Microsoft’s value closed at $219 billion; its share price has fallen by 20% since January.”

Experts in the technology industry beg to differ about Apple actually “beating” Microsoft. TechRadar cited that “Microsoft and Apple aren’t rivals in the PC market either. Apple makes hardware. Microsoft makes operating systems that it sells to hardware makers. Once again Apple doesn’t licence its OS, so it’s not a direct rival; Google Chrome, or Google’s vision of cloud computing making operating systems redundant, may turn out to be.”

This is all true. However, the reason Apple has risen to the top has more to do with innovative thinking. Their products stand out considerably because of their polished appearance, sleek style and incredible efficiency. Essentially, Steve Jobs and the rest of the folks over at Apple did the very thing that agent of change, Seth Godin, advises in his outstanding book Purple Cow: Be Remarkable!

Even though we just celebrated our own holiday here in Canada (that would be Victoria Day, in case you were wondering), we’re aware that our American cousins will soon be celebrating a national holiday of their own –Memorial Day!

And while we know that it’s going to be very lonely in cyber-land next Monday (try not to have TOO much fun at the Big BBQ without us), we thought it would be interesting to look up different facts about Memorial Day.

  • Memorial Day is a holiday which pays respects to U.S. soldiers that died serving their country.
  • Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the last Monday in the month of May.
  • The first Memorial Day was celebrated May 30, 1868. On this day, flowers were placed on the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. It was also during this ceremony that General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetary.
  • Initially, Memorial Day was called “Decoration Day”, due to the common practice of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers.
  • It was not until after WWI that Memorial Day was recognized by the Southern States. At this point, Memorial Day recognized soldiers whom had passed away in any war, as opposed to only recognizing fallen soldiers from the Civil War.
  • Memorial Day was first declared a federal holiday in 1971.
  • New York was the first state to recognize Memorial Day.
  • On this day, flowers and flags are the two symbols most often used to commemorate soldiers.
  • On Memorial Day, the American flag should be flown at half-mast.
  • Memorial Day ceremonies will often include a rendition of “Taps” in commemoration of the fallen soldiers.
  • Today, Memorial Day unofficially signifies the beginning of Summer.
  • In addition to the above mentioned ceremonies, popular ways of celebrating Memorial Day include hosting Memorial Day BBQs and Memorial Day picnics.

Share Results wants to know how you will be celebrating Memorial Day this year. Will you be hosting a BBQ? Paying your respects to military heroes?

Whether you celebrate Memorial Day by visiting the grave of a fallen solider or spending it with the ones you love, have a Happy Memorial Day –we’ll see you back in the office on Tuesday!

*Spoiler alert*

So after six seasons, LOST finally concluded last night. I started watching the show three weeks before this season, I got through all of the prior five seasons in that time. Once I started watching, it seemed to get more and more confusing but I just wanted to see how the show was going to end. I wanted all the questions that had been building up to be answered. What was I left with? …Nothing.

When I first started watching, I thought it was going to be just a shipwrecked trapped on a deserted island show…cool idea. Then they bring in polar bears, Dharma, time travel, and all sorts of crazy sci-fi elements…I was loving that. In the end, they explain none of it. At the start of Season 6 they create this “side flash” storyline. The whole season everybody is wondering what that even means, but I think all of our heads were still more curious about the island. What was the black smoke? What’s really special about the island? We’re told this last season would “reveal all”, but it seemed to just keep stringing along this side flash plot-line. This all builds up to the final episode where all they do is close out the weird side flash storyline they created. How do they close it out? Oh, they’re just all dead no big deal. WHAT??!?!?!

I’m sitting there wondering :

  • What is the purpose of that black smoke?
  • How did EVERYONE else die? It’s not just Jack in that church, it’s everyone who appeared to escape on the plane too.
  • How did man in black turn into the smoke monster instantly after being thrown into that well, and why?
  • What were all the weird symbols and markings?
  • Island moving? Time travel? Yeah none of that explained.
  • Dharma Initiative? They started going into that hardcore I think the second season, and then just dropped it.
  • How is Richard immortal, and then why is he mortal in the end?
  • WTF is the light in the center of the island?

These are just questions that are coming off the top of my head. I thought it was awful to just end the finale with a 2 and a half hour reunion only to find out that they’re all united in death. Seriously…they’re all dead?

I feel like I wasted so much time on this show, anybody saying it was a great finale has become just to emotionally attached to all the characters that anything would seem good. Even them all…being…dead.

Except for Ben, but they don’t explain that either. He’s just chilling outside the church that’s in…purgatory? Earth? Where the hell are they that once they walk into a church they get to walk into heaven or wherever that white light leads?

Seriously people…you cannot be happy about this ending. If you are, you’ve been duped hard.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it was pure coincidence that I found myself watching Mel Gibson’s cheesy rom-com “What Women Want”. As I watched our chauvinistic advertising God Nick Marshall (played by Gibson, naturally) squeeze himself into panty-hose, failing in his attempts to get into a woman’s mindset for some insight to nab the Nike account (and the looming promotion that is sure to follow), I couldn’t help but feeling guilty as the impending pressure to find THE perfect Mother’s Day gift seemed to increase by the second.

You see, being the fantastic daughter that I am, I SHOULD have been out scouring the malls and online world for a fabulous present for Mummy Dearest. Instead, I was lazing about in my pajamas watching cheesy Roms-Coms (and btw, I still have NO idea what to get her. I sure wish I had seen Le’s awesome suggestions early enough to ship in time for Sunday).

And as Nick goes through his journey to understand his relationship with women, I began thinking about the relationship with my own Mother. You know, that part when he thinks he has it all figured out, and is telling them what he THINKS they want them to hear, but they lash out at him? Yeah, I guess sometimes Moms can be like that at times as well.

Sometimes you feel as if you’re speaking a completely different language and occasionally can’t see eye to eye on something. But at the end of the day, after spending all day seething, you just can’t help but to sigh and put it all in the past behind you. And you know what this relationship is like? Affiliate Managers and their affiliates.

Think about it. It’s inevitable that either party will get frustrated at the other at some point in time. Affiliates will get annoyed when managers aren’t bringing forth any new promotions. Managers will sometimes wonder where their affiliates have disappeared to. But you know what they DO have in common with one another? They want the best for each other. They both want to see great sales and high conversion rates. And when affiliates are happy because they’re generating sales, AM’s are happy because their programs are profitable – everybody wins. Kinda like Mom and me.

So affiliates, this Sunday if you’re lucky enough to be close to family (or know a fantastic Mom), step away from the monitors, go enjoy some of that spring weather with the people you love, and give Mom a call. And we all know when Mom is happy, EVERYBODY is happy.

And Mom, if you’re reading this (err…you can ignore the first bit about your present), just know that I love you and I’ll try to be better at understanding what you want.

And to all the affiliates in my programs, have a Happy Mother’s Day, I’ll be touching base with you on Monday. Moms (and Mel Gibson) have inspired me to be more mindful of those around me, which will help me to figure out what affiliates want. But on Monday, if I don’t answer your email inquiries right away, don’t worry –it’s not because I’m sitting around in pj’s watching cheesy movies.

Well, this was an update over 2 years in the making. Yep, the last time I updated my Affiliate Marketing Guide was in April of 2008. You can imagine a lot of things have changed since then, a lot of the links were dead/irrelevant.

I’ve scoured quite a few industry blogs and looked at the past year or so of content and was able to find some good picks. I’ve added some new categories to keep up with the times (PPV is a popular category now). The more recent articles I popped in at the top. You can view the guide here.

So, I’m sure I missed a bunch of great articles. This is where it’s your turn to add to the guide, almost like a Wiki or something. If there’s a good article relating to any of the categories of the guide, post it as a comment here and as long as it’s good, I’ll add it to the guide. Thanks!
